You play a Guardian tasked with restoring the land and honoring the memories of those who lived there. Its world is built to make exploration part of the storytelling: ruined places, scattered records, equipment and boss encounters all point toward the lives and tragedies left behind.
What is the story of The Relic: First Guardian?
The broad premise, as described on the Steam store page, is that the destruction of a great relic has left Arsilthus shattered. The Guardian’s task is to mend the land and honor the memories of those who came before. That is the useful starting point; the available official descriptions do not establish a more detailed chronology or a single villain at the center of the story.

Project Cloud Games has framed the adventure as a journey through forgotten voices rather than a tale about a chosen hero eclipsing everyone else. Its developers describe the desired mood as an old folktale, where a damaged wall, a burned letter or an object left behind can suggest the ordinary people who once inhabited a place. PlayStation Blog reproduces the team’s description of wanting a story that feels like “an old folktale told by a grandfather to a child; gentle, lingering, and quietly profound.” The ruins are meant to function as evidence of lives, not merely as backdrops.
The game draws on Korean folklore and ancient mythology for its dark-fantasy atmosphere. That is a description of its influences, not confirmation that the plot directly retells a particular real-world myth.

How does Arsilthus work as a game world?
A directed journey with room to stray
Arsilthus is described by the developers as semi-open and interconnected. The main journey provides direction, but branching routes can lead to hidden areas, optional events, bosses, equipment and relics. This is not the same promise as an unrestricted open world: the emphasis is on finding meaningful detours within a connected journey. Project Cloud Games says discovery itself helps tell the story.
Regions with distinct histories
In a July 2026 interview with GamingBolt, the developer described environments including mist-covered forests, dark swamps, plains, starlit areas, ruined kingdoms, mines, fortresses, sanctuaries, corrupted villages and ancient ruins. The team’s stated aim is for each region to have its own history, faith, tragedy and emotional atmosphere. These are developer descriptions of the world’s intended variety, not a definitive map checklist.

Discoveries connect exploration, story and combat
A useful way to understand the world loop is: explore, find a clue or location, uncover a story and reward, and sometimes follow that thread toward a boss. Director In-hyeok Park told Thumb Wars that bosses can conclude particular incidents or tragedies. They are therefore presented as more than large enemies stationed along the route.
Fragmented records called Field Pages help guide players toward locations, equipment and boss encounters. Equipment can also carry a history of its own. In this structure, lore is not isolated from play: finding records, traversing a region, earning rewards and facing a boss can all belong to the same narrative thread. As Project Cloud Games puts it in its GamingBolt interview, “Every discovery is part of a story, and that story is ultimately about people who tried to survive in this broken world.”

How do combat and progression work?
Build a playstyle through equipment, not character levels
The game does not use traditional character levels. Its Steam description and developer interviews instead point to weapons, equipment, runes, relics, crafting and passive effects as the ways to develop a character. Progression is about assembling combinations that suit your approach, rather than repeatedly raising a level number.
Weapons and defensive timing
The Steam store page lists five weapon masteries: Sword & Shield, Battle Staff, Daggers, Two-Handed Weapons and Longsword. It describes attacks as using no resources, with stamina reserved for defensive actions such as dodging and blocking; powerful magic uses cooldowns and a separate meter. These are store-page descriptions and may change with updates.

Park has cited Sekiro as an influence on the tension of reading an opponent and choosing when to attack or defend. He has also stressed that parrying is not the only valid answer: players can dodge, guard, and use different weapons and skills. The combat pitch is about timing and responses, not mastering one mandatory defensive technique.
Bosses and advertised scale
Steam advertises “up to 80” mythic boss encounters. That is the store’s product claim, not an independently counted total, and it does not mean every encounter is mandatory. The developer’s story framing suggests that some bosses are tied to optional discoveries and local tragedies.

How long is the game, and when did it release?
In a GamingBolt interview published July 22, 2026, Project Cloud Games estimated around 30 hours for most players, while noting that play style affects the duration and completion-focused exploration can take longer. This is the developer’s estimate, not a guaranteed runtime.
Release timing varies across the available official and publisher pages. PlayStation Blog announced May 26, 2026 for PS5, while publisher Perp Games’ June 29, 2026 page lists a July 31, 2026 digital launch for PC and PS5, a physical edition later in 2026 and Xbox later in 2026. Steam describes the game as launched and includes a post-launch update note. These pages do not reconcile platform, territory or edition timing; check the store for the platform and region you intend to use rather than relying on one universal date.
Who is The Relic: First Guardian likely to suit?
- If you like environmental storytelling: the game’s stated approach puts records, objects and ruined places at the center of how you learn about Arsilthus.
- If you want exploration with direction: expect a semi-open, interconnected journey with optional detours, not a claim of an unrestricted open world.
- If you enjoy build experimentation: progression centers on gear, weapons, runes, relics, crafting and passive effects rather than traditional character levels.
- If you prefer varied defensive options: the director describes dodging, guarding and parrying as possible responses, with different weapons and skills to use.
For a physical edition, Meridiem Games lists a Collector’s Edition containing a physical game disc, steelbook, Past Lives hardback book, coin, map poster and exclusive in-game weapon set. Its listing establishes the described package, not current regional stock or pricing.
Steam also carried a developer post-launch note reporting 18 patches at the time the page was accessed in 2026. That is a time-sensitive update count, not a performance assessment.
