Set a six-digit PIN, then choose the restrictions you want: the PIN alone does not limit anything. Epic’s account spending control can block purchases above the limit you select, while console, computer, and mobile screen-time and payment controls must be configured separately on the device.
Start with the Epic account the child actually uses
- Check the account. Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account and open Parental Controls. If the child plays on a console, confirm the website is showing the same Epic account linked to Fortnite; Epic recommends comparing account IDs.
- Set or enter the PIN. Epic’s setup asks the parent to create a six-digit PIN. The Parental Controls tab includes settings for Fortnite as well as the Epic Games Store and Launcher.
- Choose the restrictions. Select the settings you want and save them. A PIN protects access to parental-control settings, but it does not restrict the account by itself.
You can also reach Fortnite’s controls through the game’s main menu. Epic’s Fortnite parental controls and time-limit guide describes the in-game controls, including chat and spending settings.

Set an Epic account spending limit
In the child’s Epic account, open Parental Controls, enter the PIN, and review the available purchasing or spending settings. Epic says purchases above the account’s configured parental-control spending limit will be blocked. The available limit choices can depend on the account, platform, or region; Epic’s help documentation does not establish one universal amount. Check the options shown for your account rather than assuming a particular cap.
This setting is not a substitute for restrictions on the platform that bills the purchase. Epic’s platform-control guidance separates Epic account controls from device and console payment controls. For Epic purchases on a PC, Epic suggests removing stored payment methods from the account. For purchases billed through a console or mobile store, configure that platform’s payment controls.

Set Fortnite playtime limits
Epic Time Limit Controls can set a daily total, allowed play windows, separate limits and schedules for Play and Create, and whether a child may request more time. These controls cover Fortnite and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Epic defines Play Time as playing Fortnite experiences; Create Time includes creating in Fortnite Creative or UEFN and playtesting unpublished UEFN islands.
Limits follow the Epic account across consoles and devices when the child uses the same account. Device or console time limits are separate and can impose additional restrictions. If Play and Create limits are separate, reaching the Play limit does not necessarily stop creation before the Create limit is reached. See Epic’s guide to setting playtime or purchasing limits for the account controls.

Configure controls on the console, computer, or phone too
Epic directs parents to each platform’s own settings for device-level screen time and payment controls. These are independent of Epic’s account controls, so use both layers when relevant.
- Console: Set family, playtime, and purchase restrictions in the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, or Xbox parental-control settings, as applicable.
- Windows PC: Use Windows family settings for device use. To control Epic purchases on PC, Epic suggests removing stored payment methods.
- Mobile: Set limits through the device’s family or parental-control tools. Epic points Android users to Google Family Link for screen-time options; Android’s built-in controls vary by device. On iPhone, use Apple’s parental-control settings.
Epic’s platform instructions link to the relevant Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Windows PC, Android, and iPhone guidance. Device-level controls are particularly important for purchases charged through a console or mobile store, which Epic account settings do not replace.

If chat or purchasing settings are unavailable
Check whether the child’s account is a Cabined Account awaiting parental consent. Epic says these accounts cannot make real-money purchases or use voice or free-text chat until a parent completes account setup and provides consent. The applicable age threshold is under 13 or the region’s age of digital consent, whichever is higher. See Epic’s Cabined Accounts information for details.
Communication settings may also include Allow voice and written communication with AI Features, available in Fortnite’s menu or Epic account settings. Review that option if you are configuring communication permissions; Epic’s instructions for changing Parental Controls settings cover the available controls.

Know what the PIN does—and does not do
Epic says a PIN cannot be removed after it has been set, but restrictions can be turned off individually in the settings. The PIN itself is not a restriction: the settings you select determine what the child can do. Also, some Epic settings control which options are available to the child rather than assigning the value directly, so check each setting’s description and state before leaving the controls.
