Its Super Resolution feature reconstructs a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution game frames; other DLSS features generate extra frames, reconstruct ray-traced image data, or smooth edges at native resolution. With Super Resolution, the game does not conventionally render every output pixel at the target resolution.
How DLSS Super Resolution differs from native rendering
In native-resolution rendering, the game renders its image at the target resolution through its conventional rendering path. With DLSS Super Resolution, the game renders lower-resolution input, then DLSS uses information from multiple frames—including motion data and feedback from prior frames—to reconstruct output at the target resolution. NVIDIA describes this process as sampling lower-resolution images and using temporal information to construct a higher-quality image (NVIDIA DLSS developer overview).
| Comparison | Native-resolution rendering | DLSS Super Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Rendered input | The game renders at the target resolution. | The game renders lower-resolution input. |
| How output is produced | The conventional game-rendering path produces the target-resolution image. | DLSS reconstructs target-resolution output using lower-resolution frames and temporal and motion data. |
| Performance aim | Does not add DLSS reconstruction work, but conventionally renders more pixels than a lower-resolution input path. | Aims to reduce some rendering work while producing output at the target resolution. |
| Image-quality expectation | A useful baseline, though the result still depends on the game and settings. | Can look close to native, but equivalence is not guaranteed; NVIDIA says results vary by game and content. |
So “DLSS at 4K,” for example, describes the output resolution, not necessarily the resolution at which the game rendered its input. DLSS reconstruction is not the same process as natively rendering the image at 4K.
What the different DLSS features do
Super Resolution: reconstructs a higher-resolution image
Super Resolution is the DLSS feature most directly compared with native rendering. It uses lower-resolution game input and temporal information to produce higher-resolution output. Its purpose is to reduce some of the work of rendering at the target resolution; the result depends on the game, its settings, and the chosen mode.

Frame Generation: creates intermediate frames
DLSS Frame Generation uses AI to generate frames between conventionally rendered frames. These generated frames are not the same as frames produced by the game’s ordinary rendering and simulation path, so displayed frame rate alone does not tell you how often the game updates or how responsive controls feel. NVIDIA says Frame Generation works with Reflex to maintain responsiveness, but the cited specifications do not establish that every setup matches native rendering for latency, frame pacing, or image quality.
Multi Frame Generation: creates multiple frames per rendered frame
Multi Frame Generation generates multiple frames for each conventionally rendered frame on supported hardware and in games that implement the feature. NVIDIA’s developer overview describes up to five generated frames per rendered frame for RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell-generation GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 materials also describe “6x” Multi Frame Generation; that multiplier is a feature capability label, not evidence that a game will deliver six times the native rendering performance.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation: varies the multiplier
NVIDIA lists Dynamic Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series. It adjusts the frame-generation multiplier across scenes rather than applying one fixed multiplier throughout.

Ray Reconstruction: reconstructs ray-traced image data
Ray Reconstruction is designed for demanding ray-traced or path-traced scenes. It uses AI to reconstruct image information between sampled rays and replaces conventional hand-tuned denoisers. NVIDIA’s August 2026 announcement describes a second-generation transformer model (NVIDIA announcement). Ray Reconstruction is not a substitute for Super Resolution: the two address different parts of the rendering pipeline and may be used together.

DLAA uses AI for anti-aliasing while operating at native resolution; it does not use lower-resolution input to upscale. NVIDIA describes it as using the same Super Resolution technology to construct an image at native resolution (NVIDIA DLSS developer overview).
DLSS 5: a separate neural-rendering feature
NVIDIA’s GeForce page describes DLSS 5 as 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for lighting and materials on RTX 50 Series, with developers tuning the output. It is distinct from Super Resolution and should not be treated as another name for upscaling (NVIDIA GeForce DLSS feature page).

Does DLSS look as good as native?
There is no universal answer. NVIDIA says results vary with the game engine, content complexity, training, resolution, and GPU workload. A DLSS image can look close to native, but the available NVIDIA documentation does not establish that it always matches or exceeds native rendering. Image quality can also differ between scenes and during motion, so a still frame or an FPS counter alone is not enough to judge a particular game.
When comparing results, keep the rendering conditions consistent. A comparison that changes ray-tracing settings or uses an undisclosed input resolution cannot isolate the effect of DLSS. For a useful game-specific comparison, record:
- Game and build, output resolution, graphics settings, and the DLSS mode.
- Whether ray tracing or path tracing is enabled, and whether Ray Reconstruction is active.
- GPU model and generation, plus the conventionally rendered frame rate before generated frames are counted.
- Image stability and artifacts in motion, as well as latency or responsiveness—not just displayed frame rate.
When can DLSS improve performance?
DLSS is intended to help when the GPU is doing enough rendering work for reconstruction or frame generation to be worthwhile. NVIDIA’s FAQ cautions that benefits depend on workload and resolution: a CPU bottleneck, a high frame rate already, or a low resolution can reduce the benefit. Its 2019 FAQ gives an approximate 60 FPS discussion, but explicitly notes that the point varies by game and settings; treat it as an illustration, not a universal threshold (NVIDIA DLSS FAQ).

Frame Generation also changes what a displayed frame-rate number represents. Generated frames can increase the number of frames shown, but they are not additional conventionally rendered game frames or proof that input and simulation updates occur at that rate. NVIDIA pairs Frame Generation with Reflex; the sources do not establish equal latency or frame pacing across every game and configuration.
Which GPUs and games support each feature?
NVIDIA’s current GeForce feature matrix lists Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction for RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series; Frame Generation for RTX 40 and 50 Series; and Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series. Its developer overview describes Multi Frame Generation support on RTX PRO Blackwell-generation GPUs as well. Support in a GPU does not guarantee that a particular game implements or exposes a feature. Check the game’s settings and the current NVIDIA driver or app information for the specific combination you use (NVIDIA GeForce DLSS feature page; NVIDIA DLSS developer overview).
DLSS changes quickly. NVIDIA’s developer overview says DLSS 4.5 includes Dynamic and 6x Multi Frame Generation and a second-generation transformer model, and reports a September 2026 Unreal Engine plugin update. NVIDIA’s GeForce page also describes DLSS 5. Check the current game and driver documentation rather than assuming a feature listed for one DLSS version is available in every title.
