That might mean preserving a story’s central relationship, building a new plot inside a familiar world, turning a gameplay loop into screen suspense, or finding a real-world story connected to a game. The right approach depends on what made that particular game compelling.
Why there is no single adaptation formula
Games offer different raw materials. Some are driven by authored plots and characters; others are remembered for their world, rules, movement, competition or atmosphere. A film or TV series has to decide which of those elements can carry a story for a passive audience—and which need to change.
Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, described the principle in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2022 feature: “There’s not one size that fits all in terms of a method of adapting video games to film or TV.” A faithful adaptation is not necessarily one that reproduces every scene. It is one that identifies what matters and gives it an effective screen form.
Start by identifying what the game gives you
A developed story and characters
The Last of Us already had a strong narrative, world and central relationship, so its television adaptation could draw on the game’s story while changing emphasis and adding material. Sony’s 2022 account says the first season adapted the entire first game. The creators also distinguished that complete adaptation from later material, where the full story could not fit into one season.

- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
That did not mean copying the game beat for beat. Sony describes deciding what to leave out and what to add, including giving side characters deeper treatment. A screen version can preserve the emotional stakes while changing point of view, pacing or the amount of time spent with supporting characters.
A world rather than a single plot
Fallout shows another route: tell a fresh story inside an established game world instead of retelling one game’s storyline. The Royal Television Society’s 2025 feature and the British Film Institute’s 2026 discussion point to the series’ detailed recreation of that world. This approach can reward fans’ recognition without requiring the show to reproduce a player’s particular path through a game.

A recognizable gameplay loop
Some games are compelling less because of a conventional plot than because of what the player repeatedly does. The BFI’s 2026 feature describes Exit 8 as translating a loop of walking through a passage, searching for anomalies and following rules into a claustrophobic cinematic experience. The screen version’s task is to make that repeated attention and unease legible to viewers, not to pretend that watching is identical to playing.
A story connected to the game, not contained in it
Gran Turismo did not have an established fictional story to adapt. In Sony’s account, the film instead centers on Jann Mardenborough, who played the game and became a professional racing driver. The game supplies the connection and premise; the real-world trajectory supplies a narrative.

Translate the experience, not just the plot
A player controls a character, chooses where to go and spends time inside a game’s rules. Film and television guide the audience through events selected by the creators. As Ubisoft executive Lisa Opie observed in the RTS feature, adaptation involves a shift from player agency to being guided through drama.
That shift is why a game’s emotional core or mood can matter more than a literal reproduction of its surface events. RTS producer Bronagh Monahan described the work as finding “the emotional core and the unique mood” and translating them into a story that works for television. For The Last of Us, creator and showrunner Craig Mazin described the theme he pitched as: “This is a love story and the bad guy is love.” That framing points to a relationship and its costs, rather than a checklist of game scenes.

- In THE IMITATION GAME, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII. Turing went on to assist with the development of computers at the University of Manchester after the war, but was prosecuted by the UK government in 1952 for homosexual a
Translation can also mean preserving energy rather than adding complexity. The BFI uses The Super Mario Bros. film as an example of a screen story that can embody a light, kinetic platform game’s joy without imposing a gritty tone or an elaborate redemption plot. The adaptation succeeds on its own terms if it makes the source’s playfulness vivid onscreen.

There is no universal list of details every adaptation must keep. The useful question is whether a choice preserves the source’s most distinctive appeal while making the screen story coherent.

- Preserve what gives the game its identity: perhaps a defining relationship, an unusual world, a recognizable visual style, a distinctive mood or a particular kind of tension.
- Change what depends on player control: route choices, repeated actions and interactive discovery may need a new structure or point of view when the audience is watching rather than deciding.
- Add or expand with a purpose: new scenes and deeper character work can make a story function on screen, but should serve the adaptation rather than merely fill time.
- Match the approach to the source: a close retelling can suit a story-rich game; a world-based series can invent new characters and events; a gameplay-led work may translate its rules or sensations; a game linked to real events may draw on that history.
Qizilbash summarized Sony’s approach to source material this way: “It’s all about using the source material as inspiration versus as a rule book.” Monahan’s complementary advice in the RTS feature was: “Respect the source material but don’t treat it as gospel.” Both statements argue for informed adaptation, not a license to ignore what made the game distinctive.
How to judge whether an adaptation works
“Success” can describe different outcomes, and they should not be collapsed into one verdict. A show may attract a large audience, prompt fans to revisit a game, or earn critical praise; none of those measures alone proves that its storytelling is effective.
- Creative success: Does the screen version make the game’s distinctive appeal work in its new medium?
- Audience response: Do viewers and players find the adaptation engaging? Fan response matters, but it is not the same as a measurable business result.
- Reach: Sony reported that The Last of Us averaged 30.4 million viewers across its first six episodes in a 2022 article. That is the company’s historical figure at publication, not a current audience total.
- Game engagement and sales: Sensor Tower’s report page, accessed in 2026, reports that Fallout PC daily active users remained 225% higher than pre-release levels for more than three months after the pilot. It also reports post-film increases for Minecraft: 44% in mobile in-app purchase revenue, 36% in console game sales, 9% in mobile active users and 41% in console active users. The report page does not clearly state the measurement window alongside those Minecraft figures, and these analytics do not by themselves establish that an adaptation caused all subsequent activity—or that it was artistically successful.
These examples show why reach, reception and commercial effects are separate questions. The explanations offered by creators and industry sources are informed accounts of creative choices, not controlled evidence that any one choice guarantees success.
