In Dragon Ball Legends, a Z Ability is a party effect that benefits only characters meeting its stated conditions. A bench unit is the player-community term for a party member who is not among the three chosen to fight, but may still help the team through an applicable party ability. Synergy means arranging those effects alongside useful battle roles and matchup coverage—not simply maximizing a counter.
What is a Z Ability?
A Z Ability is a character’s party effect, with a defined target and conditions. As Bandai Namco’s party formation FAQ puts it, “First, try building a party around Z Abilities.” In practice, that means checking which characters receive an effect rather than assuming it applies to every ally. An Ability might boost a particular Tag or Episode; a character outside that target does not receive that specific effect. Bandai Namco’s party formation FAQ recommends building around shared Tags or Episodes.
To inspect a character’s effects, open that character’s details and select the Ability tab. The beginner notice explains that a white glow in Party Formation indicates that Z Abilities are applying; the number at the bottom of a character icon indicates how many Z or Zenkai Abilities apply to that character. Treat that number as a quick indicator, then read the ability descriptions to see what is actually being boosted. The notice “Start Off Right With ‘Let’s Go, Legends!’” is dated 2026-05-13.
What is a bench unit?
The official battle overview describes choosing three characters from a party of six. “Bench unit” is common player shorthand for a party member who is not selected among those three for a particular battle. The term is community usage; it is not a formal label in the official FAQ. Bandai Namco’s battle overview also states that the game has over 700 playable characters, a site-stated count accessed in 2026 that can change as characters are added.

A bench character can be useful if its party ability applies to the characters you intend to use. It is not automatically a good choice because of rarity, power level, or popularity. Compare its actual effect and eligible targets with the other candidates for that slot; a different character may provide more relevant support.
What does team synergy mean?
For team building, synergy is how well the party’s effects and battle roles work together. Overlapping Tags or Episodes can let more of the intended fighters benefit from targeted Z Abilities, but a compatible ability target is only the foundation. A practical party may also need element coverage or complementary roles.

A 2021 feature on the official Dragon Ball site illustrates both ideas using SS4 Gogeta: his Z Ability targets GT, expands to Fusion Warrior at ★3, and expands to Saiyan at ★6. The feature also describes using a YEL Vegito to cover for a GRN SS4 Gogeta against an unfavorable element matchup. This is a historical example of how ability thresholds and element coverage interact, not a current team recommendation. Read the official strategy feature.
How to build and check a party
- Choose your battle core. Decide which characters you want among the three selected for battle, then identify a shared Tag or Episode that might connect them.
- Inspect each character’s details. Check its Tags, Episode, and Ability tab so you know the precise targets and effects.
- Find possible support characters. In Party Formation, use the filter to look for characters with the Tag or Episode you are building around, as advised in Bandai Namco’s FAQ.
- Check who receives each ability. Use the in-game indicator as a quick check, then confirm the specific effects and eligible characters in the Ability descriptions.
- Fill the remaining party slots deliberately. Look for abilities that help the intended battle core, while also considering element matchups and character roles. Compare candidates by target, effect, ability level, and whether the character is intended to fight or mainly support the rest of the party.
- Recheck new or updated characters. Character details can change, and ability targets may depend on ability level. For example, the 2026-09-22 UTC notice for 1st Form Frieza: Dodoria & Zarbon (Assist) says Z Ability II targets Lineage of Evil, Powerful Opponent, and Frieza Force; Z Ability III also adds a Strike Defense effect for Lineage of Evil. The notice says its posted details are under development, so check the character in-game after it is added. See the official character notice.

- Which Tags or Episodes does each character’s ability target, and do they match your intended fighters?
- What does the ability boost, and at which ability level does that effect apply?
- Does either candidate improve element coverage or add a role the team lacks?
- Will the character be one of your battle selections, or mainly support the party from the other slots?
A high number of applied Z and Zenkai Abilities can be a useful sign of shared targets, but it does not by itself establish that a party is stronger or guarantee a win. Check the effects and how the selected fighters function together.
