Generative AI and traditional digital art tools serve different roles: generative systems create or modify images from prompts and references, while drawing, painting, and compositing applications let artists make changes directly. Many creators can combine them, but the right choice depends on the control, editability, provenance, and data practices their work requires.
How the two approaches differ
| Consideration | Generative AI | Traditional digital art tools |
|---|---|---|
| How you direct the work | Describe an image or edit with prompts and, where available, reference inputs; review and curate the generated result. | Draw, paint, composite, and edit directly, deciding where to place marks and how to change the image. |
| Typical workflow fit | Useful for exploring concepts, producing variations, or making prompt-guided changes. | Useful for deliberate, incremental work in a familiar drawing, painting, or compositing workflow. |
| Control and revision | Results are shaped through model instructions and selection, with the amount of control over a specific detail depending on the system and workflow. | Direct editing makes it easier to target a particular mark or element, especially when the document retains separately adjustable components. |
| Project structure | A generated image may need further editing in an art application; how much remains separately adjustable depends on the export and workflow. | Layers and other editable components can preserve independent control, when the creator builds the file that way. |
These are not mutually exclusive categories. A creator might use a generative feature to explore a visual direction, then refine the selected idea by hand in an art application. Conversely, traditional tools can be the better fit when the work depends on precise, intentional changes throughout.
Choose by the work you need to do
When you need direct, incremental control
Choose a direct drawing, painting, or compositing workflow when you need to determine individual marks, make precise revisions, or preserve control over parts of a complex image. This does not guarantee that every project will be easy to edit: editability depends on how the document is organized and what the application saves.
When you need to explore possibilities
Generative tools can help produce or modify visual material from prompts and references. They may suit early-stage exploration or a workflow in which comparing alternatives is more important than specifying every mark in advance. You still need to judge whether a result fits the project and whether it can be revised to the standard you need.

When your process or values rule out AI features
Some creators prefer not to use generative features, whether because of their process, audience expectations, or concerns about data practices and rights. That is a valid workflow choice. If you do use AI, decide in advance which steps it may handle and which need to remain under direct human control.
What to check before using a generative service
Providers differ in what they say about training material, customer content, and commercial protections. Read the terms for the particular service and account type rather than assuming one provider’s policies apply to another.

Training sources and customer content
Adobe says its Firefly models are trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain content where copyright has expired. Adobe also says it compensates Adobe Stock contributors whose work is used for training, does not mine the web for Firefly training, and has never trained Firefly on customer content. These are Adobe’s representations about its own service, not a general description of generative AI providers. Adobe’s explanation of its Firefly approach
For any service, look for clear answers about what material is used to train models, whether uploaded prompts or images can be used, what controls are available, and whether the policy differs by product or account. A policy statement is useful for assessing a workflow, but it does not by itself resolve copyright questions.

Commercial-use language and legal risk
Adobe describes safeguards intended to prevent infringing Firefly output and says it provides intellectual-property indemnification for enterprise customers. That is a vendor statement with a stated customer scope; it is not a universal guarantee for all users, all outputs, or other services. Check the actual terms that apply to your account and intended use, and do not treat a provider’s safeguards as a legal ruling about a particular image.
Can you copyright AI-assisted art?
There is no sound basis for reducing the question to “AI used” versus “AI not used.” The U.S. Copyright Office’s report on copyrightability, published January 29, 2025, addresses outputs made using generative AI. The Office’s status page identifies that as the subject of Part 2, but the materials cited here do not establish a single result for every combination of prompting, selection, and human revision. Keep records of your own creative contributions, such as sketches, edits, and decisions about composition or final selection. Do not assume that prompting alone is sufficient for copyright protection, or that every work involving AI receives the same treatment. For a consequential rights decision, consult current law and qualified legal advice.
Copyright in an output is also a separate question from whether training on source works is lawful or whether a particular result raises similarity or other rights concerns. In its May 9, 2025 pre-publication report on generative AI training, the Copyright Office discusses arguments about public benefits and potential harms, including substitution for training works and dilution of markets for similar works. It notes that licensing may affect fair-use analysis. This is analysis of issues, not a court decision resolving them for all systems or cases; the Office says a final Part 3 will be published in the future. How to check an image’s provenance
Some files include provenance metadata, but no single check proves how an image was made or who owns it. Adobe says certain Firefly exports carry Content Credentials indicating AI use. Its FAQ says credentials can include information such as creation date, tools, and edits. Adobe Firefly FAQ
Content Credentials are metadata, not proof of authorship by themselves. Their presence can offer useful context, but the cited Adobe materials do not establish that every platform preserves them. Their absence likewise cannot establish that an image was made without AI.
What Adobe’s creator preference does—and does not do
Adobe’s help page, last updated September 3, 2025, describes a preference that can be embedded in Content Credentials to ask supported models not to train on or use a creator’s work. The page names Adobe Firefly and Spawning as supporting the preference; this is not a universal opt-out for every model or service. Adobe says setting it requires a verified name or a connected social account. Adobe: Content Credentials generative AI training and usage preference
There are workflow trade-offs: Adobe says enabling the preference prevents Adobe Stock uploads and can prevent use of the work in Firefly reference features. Check the current help page and the requirements of the service you use before relying on the setting.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Control: Do you need to direct individual marks and revisions, or is prompt-guided generation followed by curation acceptable?
- Editability: Will you need to revise a specific part later, and does your chosen workflow preserve the elements you need to adjust?
- Data practices: What does the provider say about training sources, uploaded content, and creator controls?
- Rights: Are you distinguishing output copyrightability from questions about training inputs, similarity, and the terms for commercial use?
- Provenance: Does your export include credentials or disclosure information, and can the places where you share it preserve that information?
- Personal preference: Does the workflow fit your creative process and the expectations of the people who will use or view the work?
