The right route depends on the task: a digital painting program is not a vector editor, and neither replaces an editor or a layout tool.
Choose an approach by the work you need to make
Start with the kind of output, then consider whether you want to make it yourself or hire someone. Useful factors include budget, learning curve, file formats, collaboration and handoff needs, and how much control you want over the finished work. There is no universal winner among these approaches.
- Writing: develop, draft, revise, and fact-check the work yourself; add a human editor or proofreader if useful.
- Illustration: draw or paint by hand, use a non-generative digital painting program, or commission an illustrator.
- Graphic design: sketch concepts by hand, then create the final work with a tool suited to its format, such as a vector editor for scalable graphics.
Writing: keep authorship in a human-led process
A practical alternative to generated prose is to develop the ideas and write the draft yourself, then revise it and check its factual claims. A human editor or proofreader can help with clarity, structure, and errors without taking over the creative process.
For children’s books, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) says it opposes text-prompted generative AI in writing, illustrating, translating, and other aspects of creation. It also says traditional publishing standards do not encourage or include GenAI-created text, translations, or illustrations in books. That is SCBWI’s position, not a universal rule for every publisher or market. Read SCBWI’s statement.

Illustration: draw, paint digitally, or commission an artist
Work by hand
Paper and pencil are an optional, simple way to sketch or develop an illustration. Hand drawing and painting can be the final medium or a starting point for later digital work.
Paint digitally with Krita
Krita is free, open-source painting software. The project describes it as a “professional FREE and open source painting program.” Its features include brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers, and animation tools. It is a painting and illustration option, not a complete graphic-design suite.

Commission a human illustrator
A commission can be a good fit when a project needs a particular subject, interpretation, or visual treatment and you do not plan to make the image yourself. Before work begins, agree with the illustrator on the scope, schedule, budget, usage rights, and deliverables. Prices and outcomes depend on the individual project; there is no established standard price or guaranteed result.

Hand sketches can help explore and compare design ideas before producing final artwork. You can then develop a chosen concept in a digital tool or with a designer.

Use Inkscape for vector graphics
Inkscape is a free, open-source vector editor for work such as logos, typography, diagrams, and artistic or technical illustrations. Its main format is SVG. The project lists import and export support for formats including AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG. Check the exact formats and compatibility your collaborators require before settling on a workflow.
Distinguish vector work from digital painting
Inkscape and Krita address different kinds of work: Inkscape is a vector editor, while Krita is positioned around digital painting. Choose based on the artwork you need, not on an overall quality ranking. A separate layout application may also be needed for page-based work; the cited tool descriptions do not establish a particular layout product as the answer.

Copyright and ethics depend on context
The U.S. Copyright Office’s Part 2 report, published January 29, 2025, says that generative AI output can qualify for copyright protection when a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. Merely providing prompts is not enough, while human-authored material, creative arrangement, or modifications can matter. This describes the Office’s analysis of U.S. copyright law; it is not a statement of law worldwide. See the Copyright Office’s AI report index.
The index lists Part 1, on digital replicas, as published July 31, 2024, and Part 2, on copyrightability of generative AI outputs, as published January 29, 2025. It also lists a pre-publication version of Part 3, on generative AI training, released May 9, 2025, and says a final Part 3 will be published in the future. The index’s status can change, so consult it for the latest publication information.

Legal and ethical questions are broader than whether a particular output can be copyrighted. Creative Commons notes that licensing tools may address some legal uncertainty but do not resolve concerns such as privacy, consent, bias, economic impacts, access, and control. The World Intellectual Property Organization’s 2024 publication offers organizations principles and a checklist for considering intellectual-property risks and safeguards when adopting generative AI. These resources frame issues to assess; they do not establish that every use of generative AI is unlawful or unethical.
