A Tag Character gives you an in-battle switch between two linked fighters, but it still counts as one party member for relevant counting effects. Your roster, the abilities involved, and the current mode determine which structure fits.
Start with Z Abilities, not the team label
Bandai Namco’s party-formation FAQ recommends building around Z Abilities. These abilities target characters according to specified Tags or Episodes, so a team gets the most from them when its members match those conditions. Sharing a color by itself does not show that the members receive the same ability support.
- In Party Formation, long-press a character portrait and select “Show Details” to inspect the character’s Tags and Episodes.
- Use the Party Formation filter to find characters that match the Tags or Episodes your Z Abilities target.
- Check the actual characters in the lineup against those ability conditions before choosing a tag-centered or single-color structure.
What a Tag Character changes—and what it does not
A Tag Character comprises two linked characters that fight as one unit. When its Switch Gauge is full and it can act, you can switch between them in battle. The Dragon Ball Legends character help reference notes that Tags and several battle attributes are shared, while some effects tied to the currently active character apply only to that character.
For effects that count party members by character or Tag, the linked pair counts as one character—not two. So a Tag Character can offer a switch mechanic, but it does not provide the party-slot or unit-count advantage of two separate battle members. Check the specific ability text and the Tag Character’s details when a condition depends on which character is active.

Compare the structures against your roster
| Decision point | Tag Character-centered party | Single-color party |
|---|---|---|
| Ability fit | Check the unit’s Tags and Episodes against the team’s Z Abilities; some effects can depend on which linked character is active. | Check that each character receives the relevant Z Abilities. Shared color alone does not establish ability synergy. |
| Unit counting | For abilities that count party members by character or Tag, the Tag Character counts as one unit. | Each separate character is its own unit; verify the ability’s requirement against the lineup. |
| Battle flexibility | The unit can switch between its linked characters when the Switch Gauge is full and it can act. | The lineup relies on the selected characters. Matchup coverage depends on their kits and the mode. |
| Mode conditions | Check the current mode’s composition rules and bonuses. | Check the same rules; concentrating on one color does not override them. |
Check the mode before locking in a party
Team requirements and bonuses can vary by mode or event. An official Tournament of Power announcement describes a six-character party and boosts that vary by season. An official Tri-arena announcement illustrates that an event can set its own composition conditions and combat rules. These announcements describe particular events, not guaranteed current rules or availability; check the mode in-game before building around them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which should you choose?
- Lean toward a Tag Character-centered party when the linked unit’s Tags or Episodes fit your Z Abilities and its switch mechanic suits the battle plan. Remember it counts as one unit for relevant party-counting effects.
- Lean toward a single-color party when your available characters form a lineup whose abilities support one another. Confirm the actual ability conditions rather than treating color as proof of synergy.
- Rework the lineup for the mode if its current composition rules or bonuses favor different characters or impose different conditions.
The official materials provide party-building principles and mechanics, not a current win-rate or head-to-head comparison of Tag Character-focused and single-color teams. Neither structure is established as a universal winner; compare the abilities and characters you can actually field.
