What happened to the next Gears of War game?
The game is Gears of War: E-Day, an origin story set 14 years before the original Gears of War. The Coalition chose that direction rather than making a direct sequel to Gears 5, so E-Day is not Gears 6 in the straightforward sense of continuing the numbered series. Xbox Wire’s 2026 retrospective discusses the choice and the game’s newly created assets and animations.
It is no longer an upcoming release: Xbox lists E-Day for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with access included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Check Xbox’s game page for current availability and subscription terms.
How long did E-Day take to make?
The exact development duration is not established by the official materials cited here. In a June 9, 2026 Official Xbox Podcast, Coalition creative director Matt Searcy said, “it started really after we finished Gears 5 and Tactics.” He then described the pandemic period as a time for reflecting on the franchise and deciding what the team wanted its next Gears game to be. That account gives context for the work’s sequence, not a calendar start date or a definition of when full production began. The podcast transcript does not specify either.

In a June 2024 interview, Searcy likewise described the team wrapping Gears 5, its Hivebusters DLC and Gears Tactics, while adapting to the pandemic and considering what fans and developers valued in a new Gears story. That helps explain why an origin story emerged, but still does not identify the beginning of E-Day’s full production. The 2024 Xbox Wire interview is an account of that creative reflection, not a production schedule.

That distinction matters when evaluating the “seven years” framing. A period since a previous studio visit, the time spent exploring concepts, full production, and the public marketing window are different clocks. Only the last can be calculated from the announcement and release dates, and it does not answer how long the game took to make.

What is known about launch and editions?
Xbox reported that E-Day went gold ahead of launch. Its September 17, 2026 update said pre-install began September 29 and early access began October 1; these were launch logistics, not evidence of the game’s development start. Xbox Wire’s launch update has those details.
For collectors, Xbox announced an Xbox Series X Collector’s Edition containing a physical game disc, a 15-inch statue, replica COG tags, a replica photograph and an art print. Xbox described stock as limited and regional availability as variable; the Collector’s Edition announcement is the source for its contents and availability caveat.
