A first-person Soulslike has to make melee range, timing and impact legible without showing the player’s character from the outside. The camera changes what you can see and how combat feedback reaches you; it does not, by itself, make a game a Soulslike. That identity comes more from how combat, risk, exploration and progression are designed.
What changes when the camera moves into the character’s eyes?
In first person, you see the target directly but normally see less of your own body and the space immediately around you. Your weapon, camera framing, sound and the enemy’s reaction therefore have to communicate information that a visible player-character animation might convey in third person.
A third-person camera can show the avatar, weapon movement and nearby enemies together, which may help communicate body motion and position. That is a perspective-based observation, not proof that third-person combat is always clearer or easier. Both perspectives still depend on readable timing, hit detection and enemy behavior.
Why is first-person melee harder to read?
Arkane creative director Raphael Colantonio described the challenge of designing melee for Dark Messiah as something other than simply adapting first-person shooting conventions: “We didn’t want Half Life 2 with a sword instead of the crowbar.” His account of a 2007 GDC session identifies several practical problems.

- Aiming at nearby moving targets: Enemies can fill much of the view at close range, making alignment and tracking difficult.
- Judging reach: The player may not have a reliable visual sense of where a weapon will connect. Arkane reported difficulty solving distance judgment and used more forgiving enemy hit zones as a compromise.
- Seeing attacks and damage: A swing or hit can happen partly below the player’s field of view, and the player cannot watch their own complete reaction from outside.
Arkane’s responses included exaggerated animations, separately manipulable body models and a wider field of view, alongside those forgiving hit zones. These are documented choices for Dark Messiah, not a universal recipe followed by every first-person action game.
What makes a game Soulslike is separate from its viewpoint
Developers do not share one formal, universally agreed definition of “Soulslike.” In GamesRadar+’s conversations with developers, recurring ideas include deliberate combat, meaningful risk and reward, exploration, atmosphere and mystery. There is disagreement about difficulty and where the genre’s boundaries lie, so no single feature should be treated as a complete checklist.

James Silva, lead on Salt and Sanctuary at Ska Studios, put the appeal of consequential choices this way: “Because you can make very poor decisions, making very good decisions feels meaningful.” A first-person game can pursue that kind of tension just as a third-person game can. Perspective affects how the player receives combat and world information; it does not settle the game’s genre identity.
How Valor Mortis puts Soulslike structure in first person
Valor Mortis is a clear example of the two ideas coexisting. In a GamesRadar+ report on a developer Q&A, a developer said the game was “much closer to Dark Souls in format” than to a stealth game. The developer pointed to souls retrieval, bonfire-like checkpoints, challenging bosses and backtracking to find secrets as parts of that format.

Those systems and patterns help explain the Soulslike framing; the first-person camera is a separate design choice. One More Level’s Szymon Bryła described the unusual perspective as both an opportunity and a risk, noting that there were “practically no such games on the market” in the studio’s view. That is the developer’s assessment, not a measured count of the genre. Insider Gaming’s interview with Bryła discusses the studio’s reasoning.
How to compare a first-person and a third-person Soulslike
Instead of treating camera position as a verdict, compare the information and decisions each game gives the player:

- Overhauled Character Creator – Create more lifelike characters with improved facial detail, body shapes, and visual fidelity
- Shared-Progression Cross-Play Cooperative Play – Both players now save all main story progress as long as they’re on the same “New Game” and have defeated a similar number of main bosses within one. Both players retains all loot, 100 percent vigor, and can revive each other in all online sessions.
- Free Friend’s Pass – Invite any friend to join your adventure in online co-op even if they don’t own the game. Friends keep loot and character progress, plus get full offline access to the tutorial and character creator
- Revamped Combat and Movement – V2.0 adds smoother animations, better weapon response, refined lock-on, improved evasions, and new grievous strike prompts
- Melee readability: How clearly can you judge reach, track a moving enemy and tell when an attack has connected?
- Damage and timing feedback: What signals a hit, an incoming attack or damage to the player—animation, sound, camera movement or enemy reaction?
- Awareness of nearby space: How much of the player-character, enemy positions and surrounding area can you see at once?
- Risk and recovery: What is at stake when you fail, and can you recover lost resources or progress?
- Exploration and pacing: How do checkpoints, backtracking, secrets and atmosphere shape movement through the world?
These questions distinguish a camera’s effects from the broader combat and progression structure. A first-person view can make a space feel immediate or enclosed, but neither response is automatic; it depends on the game’s framing and design.

First-person fantasy action predates the modern Soulslike label. Lunacid developer Kira has cited King’s Field and Shadow Tower as influences, while describing deliberate modernizations to gameplay, movement, inventory and fast travel. GameSpot’s interview with the developer supports a connection of influence, not a claim that Lunacid is identical to a traditional Soulslike.
