Not yet confirmed. Xbox says its next-generation console, Project Helix, is designed to play Xbox console and PC games, but its announcement does not say which existing games, discs, controllers, or other accessories will work. Until Xbox publishes Helix-specific compatibility details, owners should not assume that a particular item will carry over.
What Xbox has confirmed about Project Helix
In its March 11, 2026 announcement, Xbox described Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console and said it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” That is a broad statement of intent, not a list of supported games or a guarantee that every title from earlier Xbox generations will run.
The announcement does not specify whether Helix will have an optical disc drive, how existing digital entitlements will carry over, or which controllers and peripherals it will support. It also does not provide a Helix-specific game or accessory compatibility list.
What works on Xbox Series X|S today
Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog lists most Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles as playable on Xbox Series X|S. Compatibility is not universal: consult the catalog’s generation filters and excluded-games list for an individual title, and check its notes because features can vary by game.

Xbox says more than 500,000 hours of testing went into backward-compatible gameplay and quality standards for Series X|S. That figure describes Series X|S testing; it is not a count of compatible games or evidence about Project Helix.
Digital games
If you own a digital game included in the Series X|S backward-compatible catalog, Xbox says it appears in the console’s “Ready to Install” area. This is the current Series X|S process, not a published Helix entitlement policy.

Disc games
For a qualifying disc game on a disc-equipped Xbox Series X, insert the disc to begin downloading the game. The disc must remain in the drive to play. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. Downloads are required, and features vary by title.
Price and enhancements
Xbox says backward compatibility on Series X|S is free for games you already own that are in its supported catalog. That policy has not been stated for Project Helix. On Series X|S, selected older games may also receive enhancements such as resolution increases up to 4K, Auto HDR for certain SDR games, or FPS Boost. Availability depends on the title and console; none of this establishes what Helix will support.

Some original Xbox limitations
For original Xbox games running through backward compatibility on Series X|S, Xbox’s FAQ says original Xbox Live multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable. Offline multiplayer works where the original game supported it. These games do not gain Xbox achievements, and their saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Saves made on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud. These are existing backward-compatibility rules, not Helix specifications.

Xbox has not confirmed whether Xbox One or Series X|S controllers, headsets, racing wheels, storage devices, or licensed third-party accessories will work with Project Helix. A matching connector or familiar brand is not enough to establish compatibility: wired or wireless connection, licensing, and feature support may matter.

There is a precedent, but it applies to the current generation. In March 2020, Xbox said it was supporting cross-compatibility between Xbox Series X and Xbox One consoles and controllers in its controller announcement. Its Series X|S technology glossary also promised compatibility for Xbox One gaming accessories and games across four generations on Series X and Series S. Neither statement names Project Helix.

How to check whether a specific item will carry over
- For a game, identify its exact title and generation. Check Xbox’s Series X|S catalog for current-generation support. A listing there does not confirm Helix compatibility.
- Note how you own it. Record whether you have a digital license or a disc. For Helix, Xbox has not yet said whether digital entitlements will carry over or whether the console will support discs.
- For an accessory, identify its type and connection. Note whether it is wired or wireless, officially licensed, and whether you depend on a particular feature. Xbox has not published Helix support details for these categories.
- Wait for Helix-specific confirmation before replacing or buying equipment. Check Xbox’s official game and accessory compatibility information when it is published, and look for support for the exact title or accessory—not only a broad statement about Xbox games or accessories.
