Silent Hill: Townfall vs. Silent Hill 2: How Their Horror and Stealth Compare

SILENT HILL: Townfall and the 2024 remake of SILENT HILL 2 take different approaches to horror: Townfall puts players in a first-person view and explicitly treats stealth and evasion as ways to survive, while the remake uses an over-the-shoulder camera and foregrounds revamped combat. Konami frames Townfall around tension and uncertainty; Silent Hill 2 centers James Sunderland’s guilt, grief, and existential horror. Those are official design descriptions—not proof that one game is scarier or has more stealth than the other.

How the two games differ at a glance

Area SILENT HILL: Townfall SILENT HILL 2 remake
Camera Fully first-person. Over-the-shoulder.
Stealth and evasion Developers describe stealth as an important survival strategy, supported by the CRTV, the environment, and a peek system. Konami’s remake announcement highlights the camera and revamped combat; it does not establish that stealth is absent.
Combat Enemies can be fought or evaded, according to the developers. Konami describes a revamped combat system.
Horror framing Tension and escalating uncertainty. James Sunderland’s guilt, grief, and existential horror.
Story setting A self-contained psychological horror story set in Scotland in 1996. James returns to Silent Hill, a town he and his late wife Mary used to visit.

These distinctions come from Screen Burn Interactive’s official gameplay explanation, Annapurna Interactive’s Townfall page, and Konami’s Silent Hill 2 remake announcement.

What stealth means in Townfall

A survival option, not the only approach

Townfall is the first Silent Hill psychological horror game with a fully first-person perspective, according to its official gameplay explanation. Its developers describe stealth and evasion as survival strategies alongside combat. They point to three tools or conditions that support sneaking: the CRTV, environmental opportunities, and a peek system. The description also mentions enemies to fight, so stealth should not be mistaken for a promise that combat is unavailable or avoidable in every encounter.

The CRTV connects stealth with the game’s other systems

The CRTV is not described simply as a camera for one isolated mechanic. In a July 2026 interview, Konami series producer Motoi Okamoto discussed expanding the device to handle video and audio signals, connecting it to both the story and gameplay, including stealth. The interview supports that broader role, but does not specify enough to claim exact rules for how the device works in every encounter.

Silent Hill 2 (PS5)
  • Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
  • KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
  • The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
  • Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
  • Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K

Screen Burn described its design goal as a new town, enemies to “fight and evade,” and story-driven puzzles in a tale of mystery, tragedy, and loss. That combination suggests stealth is part of a wider survival-horror toolkit rather than the whole game.

How Silent Hill 2’s remake approaches combat and stealth

Konami’s announcement for the 2024 remake emphasizes its over-the-shoulder view, expanded explorable areas, revamped combat, and added cutscenes. Those are the disclosed changes most useful for comparison with Townfall’s explicit stealth design. The announcement does not provide grounds to say that the remake has no stealth, or to rank the games by how much stealth they contain.

The camera changes the perspective from which players see danger: Townfall keeps the view first-person, while the remake places it over James’s shoulder. That is a clear difference in presentation, but it does not by itself establish which game creates greater fear or gives players more control.

What kind of horror each game aims for

Townfall: tension and uncertainty

Konami series producer Motoi Okamoto described Townfall’s intended style this way: “Generally, Silent Hill: Townfall’s style of horror is less about jump scares and gore, and more about tension and escalating uncertainty.” The statement describes creative intent, not a measured comparison of players’ reactions.

Silent Hill 2: James’s guilt and grief

Konami presents the remake through James Sunderland’s return to a town he once visited with his late wife, Mary. Its official framing centers his guilt, grief, and existential horror. In short, the official descriptions distinguish Townfall by the uncertainty its developers want to build and Silent Hill 2 by the psychological weight of James’s story.

Konami reported that the remake reached one million combined physical retail and digital copies sold by October 11, 2024, announcing that milestone on October 17. That figure is a launch sales milestone, not a direct popularity comparison with Townfall. No comparable official Townfall player-count figure is established here.

Konami’s Townfall launch notice also says the Silent Hill series had sold more than 17.8 million copies worldwide by the end of June 2026. That is a franchise-wide total, not sales for either game in this comparison.
