Do You Need a 4K TV to Benefit From the PS5 Pro?

PS5 Pro works without a 4K TV. Here’s what 4K, 120 Hz, VRR, HDR and 8K support actually change—and how to decide whether your current screen is enough.

No. You can use a PS5 Pro with a 1080p TV or another compatible display; a 4K TV is only necessary if you want to see 4K output. The console and screen determine which resolution and display features are available, while each game determines which enhanced modes it supports.

What a 4K TV changes

A 4K TV lets you view 4K output. Sony says compatible PS5 Pro games can use its AI-enhanced upscaling technology, PSSR, alongside ray tracing and frame rates of up to 120 fps on a 4K TV. These are supported-game capabilities, not a promise that every title renders natively at 4K or runs at 4K and 120 fps; Sony notes that results vary by game. See Sony’s PS5 Pro product page for its description of compatible-game features.

Will the PS5 Pro work with a 1080p TV?

Yes. A 4K screen is not required to use the console. The TV’s capabilities affect the output you can select and see, so a 1080p display will not show a 4K image. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide explains how the console detects connected display capabilities and provides output settings.

Do you need a 120 Hz TV?

No. A 120 Hz display is relevant if you want to use a game mode that supports higher frame rates, but the TV’s refresh rate by itself does not make a game run at 120 fps. The game, its selected mode, and the display’s supported input all matter. Sony describes frame rates of up to 120 fps for compatible games, not every game.

Are VRR and HDR required?

No. Variable refresh rate (VRR) and high dynamic range (HDR) are optional display features, not baseline requirements for PS5 Pro. To use VRR, the connected equipment and content must support it; Sony notes that results can vary by TV. Sony also says VRR is disabled when the console outputs 8K. Check the TV’s specifications and Sony’s display-feature guidance rather than assuming a marketing label guarantees a particular capability.

Is an 8K TV worth considering?

8K is an optional, specific use case—not a general PS5 Pro requirement or a prerequisite for 4K gaming. Sony’s support guidance specifies an 8K/60 Hz display with Display Stream Compression (DSC) for PS5 Pro 8K output. The same guidance notes that VRR is unavailable during 8K output. Sony’s Canada PS5 resolution guide also documents the 8K/60 Hz and DSC requirements.

Should you upgrade your TV for PS5 Pro?

Start with what your current TV supports and the games you actually play. If you are satisfied with its picture and the modes you can use, the console does not make a TV upgrade mandatory. If you want 4K output or particular higher-frame-rate or VRR modes, check that the TV and the specific HDMI input you plan to use support them, then confirm that your games offer those modes.
