The best setup is one that protects the materials and makes it easy to put each game back safely.
Choose a safe place for your games
Paper, cardboard and printed components can be harmed by prolonged exposure to light. The Library of Congress says long-term light exposure can cause fading, yellowing or discoloration, embrittlement and other irreversible changes to paper-based materials. Its guidance is for paper objects in mats and frames, rather than board games specifically, but the preservation concern applies to game boxes, boards and manuals too. Choose a dry indoor spot away from radiators and other heat sources, damp walls and places where leaks are likely. Avoid attics, basements and other locations with environmental extremes when you have a more stable option. Do not store valuable paper-heavy games directly on the floor, where a leak or dampness may reach them. Alexandra Llewellyn’s care guidance says to store its products in a dry place and away from humidity, dampness, extended sunlight and heat; the Library of Congress also cautions against environmental extremes and water-leak risks for framed paper materials. What about humidity?
The Game Preservation Society’s April 2026, version 0.1 Inventory and Conservation Manual specifies 50–55% humidity for paper materials and outer boxes in its institutional collection. That is a specialist collection standard, not a universal target for every home, climate or game component. The cited consumer care guidance does not establish one household humidity range for board games. Game Preservation Society.

Support boxes and boards without crushing them
Place games so their boxes are supported and do not bear heavy loads that could crush or warp fragile packaging. Leave enough room to remove and return a game without forcing it into a tight or unstable stack. Store boards in their intended folded form unless the game’s instructions say otherwise.
The Game Preservation Society lists shape preservation for outer boxes and packages and uses flat storage for printed materials in its institutional workflow. Those archival practices are useful context, not a universal instruction to take apart or flatten a household game. Protect the game’s shape and follow its own design and instructions.

Keep loose pieces contained
Return tokens, dice, miniatures and other small components to the original insert, tray or compartment after play. This helps prevent pieces from moving around, getting lost or striking one another. Alexandra Llewellyn specifically warns that its natural stone pieces can chip if left loose; treat delicate components in your own games with the same care.
If the original insert does not keep parts separated, a small-compartment organizer is one possible solution. Check the organizer’s dimensions and confirm it fits inside the game box before using it. This is a general storage option, not a recommendation for a particular product.

Protect cards when it makes sense
Sleeves can help reduce handling wear on cards in games that get frequent use. Choose sleeves that fit the card dimensions: a loose or oversized fit can make cards awkward to handle or store. Both shelving and storage boxes can work. Choose based on your room, how often you browse the collection and whether the location meets the environmental and physical-support needs above.

A simple storage routine
- Pick the location: Use a dry, stable indoor spot away from direct sunlight, heat sources, damp walls and likely leaks.
- Set up the support: Keep boxes and boards supported, avoid heavy loads on fragile games, and leave room to remove and return boxes without forcing them.
- Pack components: Return pieces to the original insert or compartments. Add a fitted small-parts organizer only if it keeps pieces separate and fits the box.
- Decide on card protection: Sleeve cards if useful for the way the game is handled, using sleeves sized for those cards.
- Make games identifiable: Arrange them on shelves or in clear or labeled storage boxes so they can be found and returned easily.
- Check hidden storage occasionally: If a game is kept in a seldom-opened area, check the space for dampness, leaks or other environmental changes. This is a practical precaution, not a tested inspection interval.
