Choose a game by checking the exact edition’s age guidance and player count first, then compare its rules, play time and style of interaction with the people at your table. A familiar game name can cover editions with different specifications, so verify the product page for the version you plan to buy.
Start with the ages at the table
Use the publisher’s age recommendation as a screening guide, not a guarantee that every player at that age will find the game equally easy. Age labels can offer a rough clue about complexity, but the group’s interest, reading ability, familiarity with games and access to adult support also matter. GamesRadar’s family-games guide recommends asking, “What ages are the players?” and considering age alongside player count: GamesRadar’s family board-game guide.
For a younger group, CATAN Junior is one example of an edition designed to lower the barrier to play. CATAN describes simplified building rules and child-oriented trading, and positions the game for families with children ages 6–9. Its product page lists ages 6 and up, 2–4 players and a 30–40-minute playing time: CATAN Junior. The listed time is a guide, not a promise for every group.
For older children and mixed-age groups, check whether the game’s central activity will hold everyone’s interest, not just whether the age label fits. Ticket to Ride, for example, is built around collecting matching train cards and claiming railway routes; players score for longer routes, completed destination tickets and the longest continuous railway. The consulted Asmodee UK page does not establish an age recommendation or player range for a specific edition, so confirm those details on the exact product listing before choosing it: Asmodee UK’s Ticket to Ride page.

Check how many people the exact edition supports
Player count is edition-specific. These publisher-listed examples show why it is worth checking the box or product page rather than relying on the game title alone:
| Game and edition | Age guidance | Players | Listed play time | Fit and group-size notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CATAN Junior | 6+; CATAN describes families with children ages 6–9 | 2–4 | 30–40 minutes | Simplified building rules and child-oriented trading. Specifications from CATAN. |
| Clue The Classic Mystery Game | 8+ | 2–6 | Not stated on the cited product page | Hasbro describes a two-player version; check that the listing is for this edition. Specifications from Hasbro. |
| Monopoly Classic Game | 8+ | 2–8 | Not stated on the cited product page | These figures are from the cited regional product page; verify the market and edition you are considering. Specifications from Hasbro. |
| CATAN 6th Edition | 10+ | 3–4 | 60 minutes | The base game supports up to four; CATAN identifies a separate 5–6 Player Expansion for larger groups. Specifications from Asmodee USA and CATAN. |
| Ticket to Ride | Not stated on the consulted page | Not stated on the consulted page | Not stated on the consulted page | The cited Asmodee UK page describes route claiming and scoring but does not establish these edition specifications. |
Choose for two or three players—or a larger gathering
If there are only two or three of you, look for an edition whose minimum player count includes your group. The cited Clue listing supports two to six players and Hasbro describes a two-player version; Monopoly Classic lists two to eight. CATAN Junior supports two to four, while CATAN 6th Edition starts at three. Those figures apply to the named product pages, not automatically to every edition sold under the same game name.

CATAN’s official page says, “If you want to play the CATAN base game with 5 or 6 players, just add this base game expansion.” The 5–6 Player Expansion is a separate purchase, not part of the base-game player range.

Match the game’s demands to your group
- For younger players: Look for specific rule simplifications, not just a lower age label. CATAN Junior’s publisher describes simplified building and child-oriented trading.
- For mixed ages: Consider whether adults can support younger players and whether the game’s task appeals to the whole group. A publisher age recommendation is guidance, not an individual assessment.
- For a short session: Compare stated play times where available. CATAN Junior lists 30–40 minutes; CATAN 6th Edition lists 60 minutes. Actual sessions may vary by group.
- For a group outside a base game’s range: Check whether an edition or a separate expansion is required. Do not assume a larger player count from a related game or expansion applies to the base box.
- For any specific purchase: Confirm the edition, market and product listing, especially when age or player-count details are missing from the page you are viewing.
