Yes—shorter games can be worth buying when the price, quality, pacing, and time commitment suit you. There is no evidence-based minimum number of hours that makes a game a good purchase. Playtime is one useful comparison, not a verdict: a concise, well-paced story may be better value for you than a longer game you do not want to finish.
There is no universal minimum number of hours
“Short” is relative. Players use different personal thresholds, and questions such as how many hours feel fair or how much content a game needs reflect individual preferences, not a stable industry cutoff. GameSpot’s discussion of game length and Nintendo Life’s reader discussion of what counts as a short game illustrate why a single threshold would be misleading.

Start with what you want from this purchase. If your priority is a focused story or a manageable time commitment, a shorter game may suit you. If you want extended progression, exploration, multiplayer, or replay, you may prefer a longer one. Neither preference makes the other choice poor value.
When cost per hour helps—and when it does not
If maximizing playtime for a fixed budget is your main goal, divide the price by the hours you reasonably expect to play. Use comparable estimates: a main-story estimate should not be measured against another game’s completionist estimate, and optional content, multiplayer, and replay can change the total substantially.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
That calculation leaves out factors that can matter more than duration: quality, pacing, originality, emotional impact, and whether you actually want to spend many hours with the game. A longer game can include repetition; a shorter one can be tightly constructed. Treat cost per hour as one input alongside the experience you expect, not as a score that decides the purchase on its own.
What published playtime and review data can tell you
A market snapshot describes prices and playtime, not a fair-price rule
MarketYourIndie’s 2026 analysis measured a curated pool of 6,954 paid Steam games on August 15, 2026. Across five price bands above $10, it reported median cost per hour between $1.90 and $2.06, while median playtime ranged from 3.3 to 26 hours. For each game, the analysis used the median playtime attached to up to 100 of its most recent reviews and required at least 10 playtime values for inclusion. These are descriptive results from that pool and method—not a recommended rate, a guarantee of what you will play, or evidence that one length causes better value. Steam recommendations show an association, not a causal effect
A 2025 Federal Trade Commission working paper by Joel Waldfogel, Dmitri Reimers, and Michael Riedl examined 59,139 reviews for owned user-game combinations; 12.5% (7,407) were not recommended. In the observed Steam data, the authors found a negative, statistically significant relationship between playtime per dollar and the tendency not to recommend a game. The finding is an association in that sample: it does not show that adding hours would cause a game to satisfy more buyers, or that a short game is inherently disappointing. Read the FTC-hosted working paper.
Observed playtime is not your personal forecast
The same paper reports average realized playtime of 64.4 hours for owned games and 39.9 hours for unowned games in its sample. Those sample averages are not a prediction for an individual buyer or a benchmark a game must meet; your plans, preferences, and the specific game matter.

How to compare two games before buying
- Choose the playtime estimate that matches your plan. Compare main-story time with main-story time, or completionist time with completionist time. Note separately whether you expect to play optional missions, multiplayer, or replay the game.
- Check the price you would actually pay. Compare the same region, platform, and edition, and check the store listing close to purchase because prices and discounts change.
- Look for evidence about pacing and quality. Consider whether the game appears deliberately paced and well-made, not just how much content it contains. Length alone cannot tell you whether the experience will feel satisfying.
- Match the game to your available time and interests. A bounded experience may fit a busy schedule or a desire for a concise story; a longer one may fit a wish for extended exploration, progression, multiplayer, or replay.
- Use cost per hour only if it answers your question. Divide the current price by the hours you expect to play, then compare games with similar genres and playtime definitions. Keep the result beside—not in place of—your judgment about quality and fit.
A practical buying decision
Buy the shorter game when its price feels appropriate for the experience you expect and its length is a feature, not a drawback, for you. If you are uncertain, compare its likely core playtime and current price with alternatives you genuinely want, then decide whether the shorter commitment and expected quality are worth the trade-off. A large number of hours is not a requirement for a good purchase; it is a benefit only when those are hours you want.
