First determine whether the game runs on Steam Frame itself or streams from a PC. Those are separate paths: Valve’s standalone compatibility ratings apply to games running locally, not PC-streamed sessions. Once you know the mode, you can narrow down launch failures, desktop or blank displays, low resolution, and stuttering without treating every symptom as a headset compatibility problem.
Start by identifying where the game runs
Steam Frame supports standalone play, but Valve says it is primarily designed for PC game streaming. For a standalone game, the game runs on the headset; check its Steam Frame compatibility status. For a streamed game, it runs on a host PC, so first establish whether the PC and SteamVR are working before investigating the headset’s local compatibility.
Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Compatibility Review Process applies to local games and explicitly excludes games streamed from a PC. A standalone rating is therefore not a verdict on how a streamed session will work.

If a standalone game will not launch
Check the game’s Steam Frame status in the Steam library or store. Valve describes these categories as follows:

- Unsupported: Does not function because of Proton or a specific hardware incompatibility.
- Unknown: Valve has not reviewed it, so compatibility information is unavailable.
Proton lets Windows games run on Frame’s Linux-based operating system, and Valve describes it as a work in progress. An Unknown rating is not proof that a game is broken, just as a Playable rating is not a promise that it will launch without adjustments. The rating helps identify whether Valve has assessed the local-play path; it does not establish a fix for an individual title.
If SteamVR or the PC-side VR session is failing
For general SteamVR trouble on the PC, Valve’s SteamVR Troubleshooting page recommends this sequence:

- In the Steam client, verify the integrity of the SteamVR tool files.
- Check the graphics driver version and update it if necessary.
- Restart SteamVR and test again.
- Open the SteamVR status window and rerun Room Setup.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem continues, use the issue-specific SteamVR support guidance. These Windows and SteamVR steps apply to the PC-side SteamVR context; they should not be treated as a universal remedy for a standalone game that will not start.
If the headset shows the desktop instead of the VR display
There is a specific SteamVR case where the headset shows the desktop after SteamVR closes. Steam Support says Direct Mode is not enabled in this situation. To address that symptom, open SteamVR settings, choose Developer, and enable Direct Mode using Valve’s Direct Mode troubleshooting instructions.

This is a narrow fix for the PC SteamVR headset-display path. It is not a general repair for every black screen, blank panel, or Steam Frame display problem.
If the game launches but looks blurry or stutters
Separate a game that will not launch from one that runs but has poor image quality or inconsistent performance. Valve’s SteamVR Performance Assessment overlay can show frame-time information for a running VR title. To enable it, open the SteamVR Dashboard, show Advanced Settings, open the Developer tab, and turn on Draw Performance Assessment in Headset.

The overlay reports the application, its status, average frame time, and target frame time. The average is calculated over the last 32 frames. Valve says the target is based on the minimum required display refresh rate and includes SteamVR headroom. Status can show VERIFIED, PLAYABLE, UNSUPPORTED, or PENDING while data is being collected.
What an unsupported performance status tells you
Valve says repeated frame-time excursions can trigger an unsupported result; a single isolated frame over the threshold is filtered. The perfcriteria.txt file in the SteamVR logs folder records application details and frame times leading up to a threshold violation. Valve also notes that low resolution can trigger an unsupported result, so the status does not necessarily mean the only issue is stuttering.

If a temporary event such as a slow loading screen affected the assessment, the SteamVR Now Playing screen includes Clear Performance Assessment Status, which lets evaluation resume. The overlay is a diagnostic aid, not proof that every visible image defect is caused by performance.
How Valve’s standalone performance criteria differ from user statistics
For standalone Steam Frame Verified status, Valve’s stated criteria include a minimum of 72 fps at 1728×1728 during normal play for VR titles. Valve says VR games below 1440×1440 appear Unsupported. These are compatibility criteria, not observed failure rates or measurements of how often users encounter problems.

Once you have confirmed the game is running on a PC and streaming to Steam Frame, investigate the host PC, SteamVR, and the network path as separate parts of the session. Valve’s SteamVR store page lists a broadband internet connection among its minimum requirements, but that does not establish a particular router model, Wi-Fi standard, bitrate, or wireless setting as necessary.
If the evidence points specifically to a wireless streaming connection, a router may be relevant to that connection. It is not a demonstrated fix for a standalone launch failure or a local rendering problem. Valve’s documentation distinguishes standalone play from streaming but does not recommend a specific router or claim that buying one resolves these symptoms.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
- Standalone game will not open: Check its Steam Frame compatibility status.
- PC-streamed game will not open: Confirm the host PC and SteamVR work before treating the issue as a local compatibility failure.
- Desktop appears after SteamVR closes: For this specific PC headset symptom, check Direct Mode in SteamVR’s Developer settings.
- Game runs but stutters or looks low-resolution: Inspect the SteamVR Performance Assessment overlay and, if needed, the logged frame-time details.
- Streaming image or connection is poor: Investigate the PC-to-headset streaming path; do not infer a router requirement from the standalone compatibility rating.
