In Halls of Torment, critical chance is not necessarily capped at 100%: the developer said chances can exceed that threshold and apply multiple times. The practical goal is not simply to push chance as high as possible. Check how your specific weapon or ability handles critical hits, then weigh chance against crit bonus, ordinary damage, attack frequency, and any on-crit effects you want to trigger.
What critical chance above 100% means
Chasing Carrots stated in a May 16, 2023 developer announcement that “Critical Hits and other chances can now exceed 100% and be applied several times at once.” That means a displayed chance above 100% can represent a chance to gain additional crit stacks, rather than a stat that stops mattering once it reaches 100%. The announcement describes the design at that time; it does not establish that every ability in the current game processes extra stacks or related effects identically. The Halls of Torment Wiki’s mechanics page illustrates the idea with 310% chance: in its example, that produces a 90% chance of three crit stacks and a 10% chance of four. Treat this as an explanatory model from the community-maintained reference, not a universal target or a current-patch guarantee. See the mechanics reference.
Chance and crit bonus do different jobs
Critical chance concerns how often critical stacks occur; crit bonus affects the additional damage those stacks contribute. The Stats reference distinguishes base critical chance, its multiplier, base crit bonus, and its multiplier. The resulting damage also depends on the attack’s normal damage, so the chance figure alone cannot tell you how much damage a build will deal. See the Stats reference.
#1 Best Overall
The mechanics page gives an illustrative calculation: starting from 50 damage with a 220% crit bonus, its 310% chance example yields 380 damage (50 + 330) with 90% odds and 490 damage (50 + 440) with 10% odds. These are the page’s example values, not measured gameplay results. The example shows why both the chance distribution and the bonus matter.
How to choose what to invest in
- Identify the attack. Confirm that the weapon or ability can crit and how it calculates critical chance. The Stats reference says critical behavior depends on the specific weapon or ability; do not assume every attack uses the same rules.
- Compare the whole damage package. Consider the attack’s normal damage, critical chance, crit bonus, likely stacks, and how frequently it hits. A stat’s value depends on the rest of that combination.
- Check what you give up. More chance or crit bonus competes with other ways to improve damage. The available sources do not establish a universal breakpoint or quantify which choice wins across characters, traits, stages, and patches.
- Verify effects that say “on crit.” If the build depends on a proc, check the exact trait or ability tooltip and, where needed, test that interaction in your current game build. Extra crit stacks do not necessarily mean extra proc checks.
Extra crit stacks may not mean extra effect procs
A Steam community discussion cautions that some effects may not apply additional effects with additional crit chance; it gives Sorceress and Transfixion as an example and says 200% chance may be treated as one hit with increased damage. This is secondary community feedback, not an official rule for every ability. For a proc-focused build, distinguish increased hit damage from repeated effect triggers and verify the specific interaction rather than assuming the latter. See the Steam discussion.
Use character synergies as a hypothesis, not a ranking
The 2023 developer announcement describes Sorceress as lightning-focused, mentions Chain Lightning and Lightning damage that can cause Electrify, and says effects may stack. Those details make crit and lightning interactions worth investigating together, but they do not prove that Sorceress is the strongest current crit build or that every added crit stack applies another effect. Check the current ability and trait descriptions and build around the interaction they actually support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence can—and cannot—settle
The developer announcement supports the general mechanic that chances can exceed 100% and apply multiple times, while the community wiki provides a model for thinking about stacks and damage. Neither establishes a current best-in-slot build or an ideal crit chance across the game. The Steam discussion’s proc warning is useful as a reason to verify individual abilities, not as a universal rule. Since the cited announcement dates to 2023 and the wiki’s currentness has not been independently validated here, use in-game descriptions and the current patch to make the final choice.
