If your hero keeps dying early in Halls of Torment, first identify whether the problem is a few heavy hits or health steadily draining away. Maximum health can give you more room to survive big hits; regeneration helps recover between hits; block and defense reduce damage in different ways. Your best adjustment depends on what is killing you and what your current run offers.
Start by identifying how you are losing health
Watch the health bar during a dangerous encounter rather than changing several stats at once. A sharp drop from one or two attacks points to a need for a larger health buffer or less damage per hit. A slow decline suggests that incoming hits are adding up faster than you can recover, making movement, positioning, or regeneration worth checking.

The game’s defensive-stat reference lists base health, health bonus, regeneration, block strength, defense, and defense bonus as distinct stats (character stats reference). Use your character sheet and current item and ability tooltips to see which of these your run can improve.
How the defensive layers work
Health gives you a buffer
Maximum health does not reduce an attack’s damage, but it gives you more health to lose before the hero falls. It can be a useful response to large hits, especially when the available alternatives do not prevent those hits reliably.
#1 Best Overall
Block is checked before defense
Block strength and defense are separate layers. The mechanics reference describes block as being checked first; if an attack is not blocked, defense reduces the damage taken (damage mechanics reference). Block is not a guarantee: the reference’s examples show a 50% block chance when block value equals the unreduced attack’s damage and 100% when block value is four times that damage. Treat these as examples of the stated relationship, not as promised values for every hero or run.
Defense reduces damage that gets through
Defense applies when an attack is not blocked. The same mechanics reference says damage cannot be reduced below 1, so defense should not be treated as a way to make hits harmless.
Regeneration restores health between hits
Regeneration restores health over time in one-point ticks; stacking more regeneration shortens the interval between ticks, according to the character stats reference. It can help with sustained health loss and recovery between attacks, but it does not prevent a single lethal hit.
Check whether Fragile is making direct attacks worse
If the Fragile effect is active, account for it when evaluating incoming damage. The cited Fragile reference says each stack increases damage taken from direct attacks by 5%. That figure is specifically about direct attacks; the reference does not establish that the same increase applies to every damage type. If you can remove or avoid stacks, compare that option with adding another defensive stat.

Choose an adjustment for this run
- For sudden, heavy health drops: look for maximum-health increases, stronger mitigation, or ways to avoid being hit. Do not assume block will stop every attack.
- For gradual health loss: consider regeneration if it is available, and change movement or positioning to reduce how often enemies connect.
- For damage that remains high after a hit gets through: compare defense with block strength using the current tooltips. They act at different points in the damage process, so one is not a direct substitute for the other.
- For an active Fragile effect: check its stacks and whether they are increasing damage from the attacks causing trouble. If they are, reducing the effect may matter more than adding a small amount of recovery.
- Compare the opportunity cost: weigh each defensive choice against any offensive or movement benefit you would give up. The available mechanics references do not establish a universal stat ranking for every hero, stage, or difficulty.
After making one change, observe whether the same failure pattern improves. That makes it easier to tell whether you needed a larger buffer, more recovery, damage reduction, or fewer incoming hits.

A May 10, 2024 update note describes changes to defensive-stat scaling, including a move toward increasing base values on items that raise block or defense (update note). It is useful version context, not confirmation that no later balance changes occurred. For exact values and item effects, rely on the live character sheet and tooltips in your current game version.
