Dungeon Munchies is the better fit if you want a side-scrolling action RPG where eating dishes changes your abilities. Choose Cuisineer if you want dungeon runs to feed a second loop of cooking and running a restaurant. Both put food at the center, but they are different kinds of games.

How the two games use food

Game Core structure What food does What happens between fights
Dungeon Munchies Side-scrolling action RPG set in an underground complex Hunting creatures, cooking them, and eating dishes grants abilities. The focus stays on surviving, fighting, progressing, and trying to escape.
Cuisineer Roguelite dungeon crawler combined with restaurant management Ingredients gathered in dungeons become dishes for the restaurant. You cook, serve customers, manage and customize the establishment, then head out again.

The key distinction is whether you want food to shape your character or to connect dungeon exploration with a business-management loop. The games are not interchangeable examples of the same subgenre: Dungeon Munchies is described as a side-scrolling action RPG, while its publisher describes Cuisineer as a roguelite and management game.

What playing Dungeon Munchies is about

In Dungeon Munchies, you are revived in a vast underground complex and aided by Simmer, an undead necro-chef, as you try to stay fed and find a way out. Steam describes its central loop as hunting creatures, cooking them, and eating dishes to gain abilities: Dungeon Munchies on Steam. Food is therefore part of character progression and combat, rather than the start of a separate restaurant simulation.

Steam lists maJAJa as developer and publisher. The game left Early Access and fully released on July 27, 2022; Early Access began June 5, 2019. PlayStation describes it as a side-scrolling action RPG, and its listing notes PS5 play compatibility while warning that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5: Dungeon Munchies on PlayStation Store.

  • Hundreds of ingredients, items, recipes, weapons and combinations to build your own custom skillset.
  • 3 difficulty levels - Apprentice to Executive Chef – to make the game accessible to everyone.

What playing Cuisineer is about

Cuisineer follows Pom, who returns to Paell and must reopen her parents’ indebted restaurant. Dungeon trips supply ingredients; those ingredients and recipes feed the work of cooking and serving customers. That gives the game two linked activities: combat and gathering on expeditions, followed by restaurant operation and customization.

Marvelous Games says the game has more than 100 recipes and procedurally generated biomes whose size, shape, and resources change between visits. Combat uses utensils and gear, as well as flavor powers including Salty, Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Umami, Frosty, and Toasty. See the official Cuisineer page for its gameplay and platform details.

Dungeon Munchies [Deluxe Edition]
  • Big Menu for a Big Stomach - With a stomach that can only take seven dishes, you must put together a meal that maximises your abilities. Guava juice, grilled shrimp, or crab stirfry may mean the difference between health recovery, damage output or a watery shield!
  • Tools of the Trade - Craft all kinds of deadly weapons out of the animal and plant parts you can’t eat. Pair them with your favorite dishes to create the most overpowered combat combo!
  • Farm-fresh & Locally-sourced - In this day and age, ingredients are hard to come by. Be prepared to face off electriacl snails, razor-sharp shrimp claws, and laser wasps to get the delicious parts you need!
  • Something Doesn’t Feel Right… - From the self-professed-AAA-license-holding necro-chef, to the diabolical voodoo “Lord of the Forest”, to the radical revolutionaries of the fruit revolution, everyone wants you to do their thing, but no one’s really right in the head. What’s really happening down in this dungeon?

Cuisineer launched on Steam on November 9, 2023. The publisher lists releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2025. Its Steam listing describes it as a “super cute and tasty roguelite-flavored dungeon crawler”: Cuisineer on Steam.

Which one should you play?

Choose Dungeon Munchies for food-powered action

  • You want a side-scrolling action RPG rather than a run-based dungeon crawler paired with management.
  • You like the idea of food directly granting abilities and contributing to your character build.
  • You want the central premise to stay focused on combat, survival, and escape instead of adding customer service and restaurant upkeep.

Choose Cuisineer for dungeon runs plus restaurant management

  • You want a second major loop after combat: turning gathered ingredients into meals and serving customers.
  • Restaurant operation, customization, and responding to customer needs sound as appealing as dungeon exploration.
  • You are drawn to recipe variety, changing procedural biomes, and food-themed combat powers.

If you are still undecided

Ask whether running the restaurant sounds like a compelling part of the game, not merely a way to process ingredients. If yes, Cuisineer is the closer fit. If you would rather keep food tightly bound to action and character abilities, choose Dungeon Munchies.

Platforms, reviews, and physical editions

Both games are available on PC through Steam, and both have console releases listed in the sources above. Check the relevant regional store before buying, especially if you are choosing a specific console edition. The PlayStation listing for Dungeon Munchies includes a PS5 compatibility caveat for some PS4 features.

Steam review figures are moving storefront snapshots, not a controlled comparison. On October 7, 2026, Dungeon Munchies showed 94% positive from 910 English reviews. Cuisineer showed 76% positive from 1,823 total reviews overall, with recent reviews at 64% positive from 14 reviews. These figures can change and should not be treated as a stable measure of which game is better: Dungeon Munchies on Steam and Cuisineer on Steam.

Physical editions have also been reported, but edition contents and current stock depend on region and date. XSEED says the Cuisineer Day 1 physical edition includes the game, original soundtrack, a 160-plus-page softcover art book, and an 8-by-11-inch towel in a custom box: XSEED’s Cuisineer page. A secondary post reports that Dungeon Munchies had standard and collector’s physical editions for Switch, PS4, and PS5, but check a current retailer listing to confirm availability and exact edition details: reported Dungeon Munchies physical-edition announcement.
