In supported games, its stronger graphics hardware and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) can help developers improve image quality, ray tracing, frame rates, or some combination of the three. It is easiest to justify if the games you play have substantial Pro enhancements, you have a display that can show the gains you value, and the current total price makes sense to you.
What changes in games on PS5 Pro?
Sony’s September 2024 announcement identified three main capabilities: a GPU with 67% more compute units, memory that is 28% faster than the then-current PS5, and advanced ray tracing. Sony said the combined system enables up to 45% faster rendering. Those are Sony’s hardware and capability claims, not independent measurements of a particular game. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes the figures.

More options for image quality and frame rate
The extra graphics headroom gives developers room to offer sharper reconstructed images, more detailed lighting or reflections, higher or steadier frame rates, or a mix of improvements. In some compatible games, PlayStation says players can get 60 fps or up to 120 fps with ray tracing and PSSR-enhanced 4K output on a 4K TV. That is a capability, not a promise for every game: available modes and actual results depend on the title. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro product page outlines the features and notes that results vary by title.
PSSR and image reconstruction
PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning image upscaler. It reconstructs a higher-resolution-looking image from a game’s rendered output, giving developers another way to balance visual detail and performance. In February 2026, PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny announced an upgraded PSSR technique intended to improve reconstruction precision and stability in motion; Sony named Resident Evil Requiem as the first game using it. Sony has also described an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting and listed support in games including Silent Hill f, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Monster Hunter Wilds, Alan Wake 2, Control and Cyberpunk 2077. Availability is title-dependent. Cerny’s upgraded PSSR announcement explains the revised technique.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Which games look or run better on PS5 Pro?
Only selected PS5 games have Pro enhancements, and the size and type of change vary. PlayStation’s product page advertises more than 100 enhanced PS5 games as of October 7, 2026; Sony reported over 50 enhanced games at the console’s November 2024 launch. These are counts of supported titles, not measures of how much any one game improves. See the current product page and Sony’s launch catalogue announcement for their respective lists and dates.
Check your own games before buying
Start with the titles you actually play, then look at Sony’s Pro feature notes and the available in-game modes. Compare the trade-offs that matter to you:
- Image quality: Does the Pro mode improve resolution or reconstruction, and is that noticeable on your display?
- Frame rate: Does it offer a higher or steadier frame rate than the standard PS5 mode you use?
- Ray tracing and effects: Are improved lighting, reflections or other effects available in the mode you prefer?
- Mode trade-offs: Does the most attractive visual option reduce frame rate, or does a faster option dial back effects?
Sony also says PS5 Pro plays over 8,500 PS4 titles and describes Game Boost as improving frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games. “Some” matters: this does not establish that every backward-compatible game improves. For a buyer, the safest basis for a recommendation is the official feature information for the games in their own library. The cited official material does not provide a controlled, independent game-by-game benchmark set, so specific performance gains should not be treated as independently verified measurements.

PS5 Pro vs. standard PS5: the practical differences

Is PS5 Pro worth it if you already own a PS5?
There is no universal yes-or-no verdict: the value depends on your games, display, preferred modes and the cost of moving to the Pro. Use this decision check before upgrading:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Lean toward upgrading if your most-played games have meaningful Pro modes, your display can show the resolution or refresh-rate improvements you want, and those changes justify the current total cost.
- Keep your standard PS5 if you are satisfied with its performance, your regular games have little or no Pro difference, or your setup cannot show the benefits you care about.
- Recheck the cost if you need a Disc Drive or would buy a different display to take advantage of a particular feature. Include those items and the value of your existing console when working out the net upgrade cost.
What else should buyers consider?
The official product page lists Wi-Fi 7 compatibility and 2TB of storage. Wi-Fi 7 only matters for online use when the rest of your network supports it, and storage is useful in proportion to your game library; neither feature alone improves how a game looks or runs. Sony announced a US launch MSRP of $699.99 in September 2024 for a disc-less console with a 2TB SSD. Because that was the launch price, not a current quote, compare today’s local console, bundle and accessory prices before deciding. Sony’s launch announcement gives the historical configuration and MSRP; the product page lists current product features.
For a new-console buyer, compare the current prices of both models against the games and display you plan to use. The Pro’s distinguishing benefits depend on supported software; the standard PS5 remains the baseline experience Sony says it is enhancing.
