Which GTA is best for police chases?
There is no objective winner: the games offer different chase structures, and the available evidence does not establish that one has smarter police or is more enjoyable for everyone. GTA V is the better default recommendation because it combines a familiar wanted-level escape loop with structured police-chase races in GTA Online. GTA IV is the more specific pick for players drawn to evading a search area after police lose sight of them.

What makes GTA V’s chases worth choosing?
Wanted-level escapes in Story Mode
GTA V uses a one-to-five-star wanted scale. The Xbox-hosted game help says five stars bring the National Guard. Rockstar identifies tunnels as one way to escape police and, in GTA Online, says Lester can remove a wanted level for a fee. These are options within the game’s wanted system, not a guarantee that every escape will feel easy or predictable.
Pursuit Series races in GTA Online
If you want police chases to be the point of the activity rather than an interruption to a mission or free roam, GTA Online has a more structured option. Rockstar’s July 2021 Los Santos Tuners notes describe seven point-to-point Pursuit Series races in which participants are wanted by police. Rockstar’s Race Creator guide also explains that enabling Wanted Level lets police chase race participants.

Edition and platform matter
Rockstar lists GTA V for PS5, with Story Mode included, and lists GTA Online separately. Its PC store listing includes both Enhanced and Legacy editions. Check the product page for your platform and the edition you intend to play: features and availability should not be assumed to be identical across editions. Rockstar’s product page is the current place to verify the PS5 listing, while its PC listing identifies the PC editions.
When GTA IV is the better choice
GTA IV suits players who enjoy managing a search rather than simply outrunning a pursuing vehicle. The secondary mechanic reference describes a visible radius that remains around the last location where police saw the player; if police spot the player again, the search refocuses. That creates a different escape rhythm from a chase defined chiefly by maintaining pressure and breaking line of sight.

How to choose before you buy
- Pick your chase style. Choose GTA V for wanted-level escapes and the option of police-focused races; choose GTA IV if the visible search-area mechanic is the feature you specifically want.
- Confirm the platform and edition. For GTA V, check Rockstar’s listing for your platform; on PC, distinguish Enhanced from Legacy. For GTA IV, verify that a compatible version is currently available where you plan to play.
- Decide whether you want online races. Pursuit Series is a GTA Online activity, not a Story Mode feature. If you only want single-player play, weigh GTA V’s wanted system rather than assuming the races are part of the story.
How current is GTA Online’s police-chase content?
GTA Online continues to change. Rockstar’s July 23, 2026 update notes include wanted-level overrides in Mission Creator and additions to law-enforcement vehicles. These dated notes show that chase-related tools and content can evolve; they do not establish that every feature works identically in every edition.
