In GTA V, a wanted level usually won’t vanish the moment you break police sight: you need to stop committing crimes, get clear of the search area, and stay out of view until the search ends. The exact fix depends on the game and mode. The steps below focus on GTA V Story Mode and GTA Online; GTA IV and San Andreas use different wanted systems.
Why the wanted stars stay on screen in GTA V
Wanted stars show police interest. The GTA V game help manual hosted by Xbox describes a scale of one to five stars. Breaking line of sight starts a search phase; it does not necessarily clear the stars immediately. The time needed varies with wanted severity, and some areas may keep the heat from clearing until you leave them. These behavior details are summarized by the community-maintained GTA V wanted-level reference.

How to clear a wanted level in GTA V Story Mode
- Stop committing crimes. Further offenses can renew police attention and make escape harder.
- Break police line of sight. Move away from officers and their search area; being behind a nearby obstacle may not be enough if police can still see you.
- Stay out of sight until the search ends. Watch the minimap and search indicators where available, and wait for the stars to disappear before returning to the open.
- Change location if the heat is not clearing. Some areas can prevent the wanted state from clearing until you leave. If police keep finding you, move farther away rather than waiting beside the search area.
How to lose the cops in GTA Online
Call Lester when the option is available
Rockstar’s GTA Online Starter Tips confirms that Lester can remove a wanted level for a fee. If the option is available in your activity, first get distance from police and stop committing crimes, then call Lester and choose “Remove Wanted Level.” The option is not available in every activity: GameSpot’s April 6, 2022 guide notes that it is unavailable during most story missions and heists. Because GTA Online changes over time, availability can depend on the current activity.
Calling Lester is not a guarantee if you immediately attract police again. GameSpot’s guide also cautions that crimes shortly before or after the call, or being close to police, can undermine the removal.

Evade police without Lester
Use the same basic approach as in Story Mode: stop offending, break sight, and remain clear until the search ends. Rockstar also recommends Los Santos tunnels as an escape route. A tunnel can block police visibility, but its usefulness depends on where you are and what the activity allows.
In GTA V Story Mode or Online, fully submerging underwater can also help break police visibility. Keep track of oxygen and surface somewhere officers cannot see you; surfacing in view can undo the escape. GameSpot’s guide covers both underwater hiding and underground tunnels as situational alternatives, not guaranteed solutions for every mission or location.

Check the game and mode before troubleshooting further
“GTA” covers games with different wanted mechanics. The available references describe separate systems for GTA IV and San Andreas; GTA V instructions should not be assumed to apply to them. Confirm the title, mode, and any active mission objective before following a game-specific escape method.
- Check whether you are in Story Mode or GTA Online.
- Look for a mission or heist objective that may restrict Lester or ordinary evasion.
- Make sure you have not committed another crime or moved back into police view.
- If hiding underwater, account for oxygen; if using a tunnel, ensure it is accessible in your current location and activity.
The sources available do not establish one universal wanted-level bug or a single fix for every save, activity, platform, and game version. A persistent wanted state alone is not enough to diagnose a glitch.
