A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before installing a game mod, verify that it came from the creator’s real page on an official channel or established host, inspect the exact file’s status and contents, and scan the download with up-to-date security software. Treat a clean scan or platform badge as useful evidence—not proof that a file is safe.
Start with the source and the exact file
Open the mod through the game’s official mod channel or a known host, then check that the creator, description, supported game or version, and download match what you intended. Avoid reposts and unsolicited links to supposed “required tools.” Steam recommends downloading custom content only from trusted sources and warns that malware can be disguised as gaming-related utilities (Steam: Account Security Recommendations; Steam: Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) system).
Check the actual file list against the mod page and installation instructions. A familiar mod name or a popular page does not establish that a particular download is authentic. Read recent comments or announcements for reports about changed files or suspicious behavior, but use community history as one signal rather than a guarantee.
Interpret the host’s file-level scan status
A mod page can contain multiple downloads, and scan indicators may differ from file to file. On Nexus Mods, inspect the badge beside each intended entry in the Files tab and open its VirusTotal report when available. Nexus describes these statuses as follows (Nexus Mods: File scan status):
#1 Best Overall
- WITH THE HIGH SCORE AMONG THREAT INTELLIGENCE PROVIDERS, you know you’re in good hands. Stay safe from viruses, ransomware, phishing and more
- MAINTAIN YOUR GAMEPLAY SPEEDS with a solution that scans faster and uses fewer system resources than competitors, so it won’t slow you down
- KEEP YOUR GAMING RIG RUNNING SMOOTHLY with our System Optimizer, which detects system issues, wipes away unnecessary files, and makes deleted files unrecoverable
- THERE’S RARELY A CONVENIENT TIME FOR SOFTWARE UPDATES—especially not while you’re raiding. Our software updates automatically in the background, so it never gets in your way
- WEBROOT PROTECTION IS QUICK AND EASY TO DOWNLOAD, install, and run, so you don’t have to wait around to be fully protected
| Status | What Nexus says it means | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Internal checks and VirusTotal scan passed. | Reassuring, but not a guarantee of safety. |
| Blue | Internal checks passed, but VirusTotal could not scan the file. | Do not interpret this as a clean VirusTotal result. |
| White | The file has not been scanned. | There is no completed scan result to rely on. |
| Yellow | Scans are pending and the file is unavailable. | Wait for the scan process rather than trying to obtain the file elsewhere. |
| Red | A check failed or VirusTotal reported a significant number of detections. | Stop and review the file and report; do not install it based on the page’s reputation alone. |
These meanings are specific to Nexus Mods. Other sites may use different indicators or review processes, and the cited guidance does not establish a standard shared across hosts.
Look at what the download contains and asks you to do
Read the installation instructions before running anything. Note whether the download is an archive, a script, a DLL, an executable, or an installer, and whether those contents make sense for the mod’s stated purpose. An executable is not automatically malicious, but an unexplained installer or unrelated program deserves extra scrutiny.

- Pause if an instruction asks you to turn off antivirus, run an unrelated “fix,” provide broad privileges, or sign in through a separate link without a clear reason.
- Investigate unexpected self-extracting installers, nested archives, or programs that connect to the internet—especially when the mod description does not explain their role.
- Compare the files inside the download with the creator’s stated contents. If the archive contains unexpected items, or the instructions do not explain what a program does, do not proceed until the host or creator clarifies.
Nexus says it may block or review potentially harmful file types, rejects nested archives so files can be scanned, and generally prohibits executables that connect to the internet unless that capability is crucial to the mod or utility (Nexus Mods: File scan status; Nexus Mods: File submission guidelines). These are host policies, not a universal test for whether a file is safe.
Scan the downloaded file before running or copying it
Save the file, update your security software, and scan the download before launching an installer or copying files into the game. If a security tool detects a threat, take the alert seriously. False positives can happen, but Steam advises users who are unsure about a detection to report it and contact the security vendor. Do not create an antivirus exception just to make the mod work; Steam says to do so only when you are confident the file is not malware (Steam: Antivirus software reports Steam games are malicious).

A clean result is not a safety certification. Steam warns that malware can be tailored to avoid detection by common antivirus software, so a file’s scan result should be considered alongside its source, contents, and behavior (Steam: Account Security Recommendations). Nexus also notes that mod files can trigger false positives; neither a detection nor an absence of detections settles every case (Nexus Mods: File scan status).
Combine the signals—and stop if they conflict
Assess the file using several independent clues: whether the source and author are authentic, the host’s status for that exact file, whether the contents match the instructions, the creator’s and upload’s history, and what your security software reports. Nexus recommends weighing scan status alongside factors such as downloads, endorsements, and time available; popularity and age can inform judgment, but neither proves a file is safe.

There is no reliable universal detection-count cutoff in the cited guidance, and file extensions alone are not a dependable verdict: a single detection is not automatically a false positive, and a DLL is not automatically malware. Nexus describes a significant number of VirusTotal detections as a reason for review but does not give users a numerical threshold. If the signals disagree or the file’s behavior is unexplained, leave it uninstalled and ask the host or security vendor for help.

If antivirus flags a mod, leave it quarantined or remove it while you investigate. Follow your security vendor’s guidance, report the file to the host, and contact the vendor if you need help interpreting the detection. Do not add an exception unless you have established that the detection is a false positive; Steam’s support guidance is specifically about handling antivirus reports, not certifying mods (Steam: Antivirus software reports Steam games are malicious).

Steam’s Verify integrity of game files feature is a repair check for the game’s installed files. Its support instructions do not describe it as a malware scan or a safety check for third-party mods. Use it if antivirus has deleted or corrupted game files—not as evidence that a mod is clean (Steam: Verify Integrity of Game Files).
