If a free PS4 game will not download or install, first check Notifications > Downloads, PlayStation service status, your system software, and available storage. Then retry the game from Library > Purchased. A stalled queue, a padlock, and an installation error point to different problems, so match the fix to what you see rather than repeatedly restarting the same download.
The menu paths below reflect PlayStation Support guidance accessed October 7, 2026. Follow the labels shown on your console if they differ; some source pages are regional, so availability and account conditions can vary by country.
PS4 game won’t download: start with the queue
On the PS4 function screen, open Notifications > Downloads and select the game. If it has not started, pause it and resume it. If that does not work, cancel and delete the download, then start it again from your Library. PlayStation recommends checking PlayStation service status before retrying; if there is a service alert, wait for service to return and try again.
- Open Notifications > Downloads.
- Select the game and choose Pause, then Resume.
- If it still will not start, cancel and delete the download.
- Open Library > Purchased, select the game, and choose Download.
A Store game installs automatically after its download finishes. To find it again, use Library > Purchased, select the title, and choose Download, as described in PlayStation’s PS4 game download instructions.

Check the account if the game is missing or has a padlock
A free game still has to be available to the account you are using. In Library > Purchased, look for the title while signed in to the account that obtained it. If it appears with a padlock, or an entitled game or add-on is missing, restore that account’s licenses:
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- Select Restore and follow the on-screen instructions.
PlayStation identifies license restoration as a step for a padlock, missing game or add-on, or a game that crashes. If access still appears wrong, check that the PS4 is activated as the purchasing account’s primary PS4 where relevant. License restoration does not resolve a storage shortage or an active service outage. See PlayStation’s license-restoration guidance.
Rank #2

Check storage before retrying a large download
On the game’s PlayStation Store page on the console, scroll to Details and note the required free space. Compare that with Settings > Storage. The requirement varies by game; there is no single free-space figure that applies to every PS4 title.
If the console is short on space, remove an application from its content launcher or Library by highlighting it, pressing OPTIONS, and choosing Delete. Deleted games can be downloaded again from Library, according to PlayStation’s storage guidance. If you need more capacity, Sony lists USB extended storage and upgrading the PS4 HDD as options; an external drive addresses capacity, not account, network, service, or file-corruption problems.

PS4 download stuck: test the connection
If the download has begun but stops progressing, check PlayStation service status and run the console’s connection test at Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. A queue that is stuck is different from an entitlement problem or a file that downloaded incorrectly, so note whether the download is waiting, stalled, or complete before choosing the next step. PlayStation’s instructions for a PS4 game download that will not start or is stuck include checking the connection and, if the problem persists, rebuilding the database in Safe Mode.
Game downloaded but won’t install: use the error code
If the download completes but the game does not install properly, check the displayed error code. Sony’s PS4 error-code index distinguishes several causes:

| Code or symptom | What it indicates | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| CE-37704-1 | The download was cancelled because there was not enough HDD space. | Check the game’s Store Details requirement against Settings > Storage, free space if needed, and retry. |
| CE-34679-9 | An identical file is already saved on the console. | Check the console for the existing file before starting another download. |
| CE-37732-2 | The downloaded file was not installed properly and may have been corrupted during download. | Delete the downloaded content from Notifications > Downloads using OPTIONS, then retry. For a patch, highlight the game and choose OPTIONS > Check for Update; for a Store game, download it again from Library. |
For CE-37732-2, PlayStation’s code-specific instructions call for deleting the affected download and trying again. Redownloading a Store game is different from checking for a patch: use Library for the former and Check for Update for the latter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Update the system, then consider rebuilding the database
Make sure the PS4 system software is current. If queue, service, account, network, and storage checks have not helped, Sony lists Safe Mode > Rebuild Database as a troubleshooting step for persistent download problems. A separate application-error guide also includes updating, restarting, restoring licenses, deleting and redownloading the application, and then rebuilding the database. See PlayStation’s Safe Mode options and its CE-41839-5 guidance.

Rebuilding the database is not the same as initializing the PS4. Initialization or reinstalling system software is a later, destructive measure: Sony says it erases all console data and advises backing up first. Do not use unofficial system-software files or interrupt a system-software installation. Sony’s PS4 system-software instructions explain the installation options and warnings.
