If you want a retro-style shooter to play on Steam Deck, start by checking DUSK, Prodeus, AMID EVIL, ULTRAKILL and CULTIC. They are candidates, not a verified compatibility ranking: current Steam Deck ratings and setup requirements for this group have not been established here. Check each game’s live Steam listing before buying.
What “Steam Deck-compatible” means
Steam Deck compatibility is more than whether a game launches. Valve’s categories account for input, display, seamlessness and system support. Verified means a game works great on Deck out of the box; Playable means it may need user tweaking; Unsupported means it is currently not functional; and Unknown means it has not yet been checked. Valve says the review process is ongoing, so check the live Steam listing for the current rating.
Why Boltgun is the reference point
Steam lists Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun as a 2023 game developed by Auroch Digital and published by Focus Entertainment. Its official description brings together the Warhammer 40,000 setting, fast first-person-shooter action and 1990s-inspired retro visuals. DUSK is one of the titles readers mention when asking for boomer shooters to play on Deck. The available information does not establish its current Steam Deck category or setup requirements.
Prodeus
Prodeus also appears in reader recommendations. Its current Deck rating and any necessary tweaks should be confirmed on Steam rather than inferred from those recommendations.
AMID EVIL

Boltgun 2 is announced, not yet established as released
The official announcement describes Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 as a sequel and names Ultramarine Malum Caedo and Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath as playable characters. It gives an October 14, 2026 release date for Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because that date is in the future as of October 7, 2026, the game is announced rather than established as released; a planned Steam launch does not establish Steam Deck compatibility.
