If you liked FINAL FANTASY XVI, the best next game depends on what you want to carry forward: a dramatic fantasy story, real-time action, spectacular abilities, or simply another action RPG. Tales of Arise is the closest genre neighbor in this short list; ELDEN RING is a darker, more distinct alternative. Neither should be treated as a direct match for every part of Clive’s adventure.
What makes a game a good follow-up to FINAL FANTASY XVI?
Square Enix classifies FINAL FANTASY XVI as a single-player action RPG. Its Steam description centers on Clive Rosfield’s revenge against Ifrit, swordplay, and Eikonic abilities. Those elements point to several different reasons you might want a similar game: story-led fantasy, active combat, or powerful abilities in a dramatic setting. A recommendation can share one of those qualities without reproducing the whole experience.
The game also offers Story-focused and Action-focused modes. Its listing describes Story-focused mode as an option for players less comfortable with action games who want to concentrate on the story; Action-focused mode gives players control over every action. If you preferred the story emphasis, prioritize Tales of Arise. If what appeals is a fantasy action RPG rather than a comparable narrative or combat style, consider ELDEN RING.
Best Steam Deck picks if you liked FINAL FANTASY XVI
| Game | Why it may appeal | How it differs | Steam Deck label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tales of Arise | Another action RPG with a fantasy adventure, a diverse cast, and a story. | A nearby genre choice, but its listing does not establish combat equivalence with FINAL FANTASY XVI. | Steam’s listing found for this article displayed Verified; check the live page for the current label. |
| ELDEN RING | An action RPG set in a dark-fantasy world, for players drawn to a different fantasy tone. | It is an alternative in setting and genre, not a confirmed narrative or combat match for FINAL FANTASY XVI. | Not established here; check the live Steam listing. |
Tales of Arise: choose it for another story-led fantasy adventure
Steam describes Tales of Arise as an action RPG built around a fantasy adventure, cast, combat system, and story. That makes it the more natural first stop if you want another narrative-focused fantasy game. The available listing information supports the genre and story comparison, not a claim that its combat feels like Clive’s swordplay or Eikonic abilities.

ELDEN RING: choose it for dark fantasy and a different direction
Bandai Namco describes ELDEN RING as an action RPG in an authentic dark-fantasy world. Its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, adds weapons, equipment, weapon skills, magic, enemies, boss encounters, and plotlines, according to the publisher. Pick it if dark fantasy and action-RPG play are the draw; the available information does not support presenting it as a close match for FINAL FANTASY XVI’s story or combat.
Check Steam Deck compatibility before you install
Steam Deck compatibility labels are useful signals, not permanent guarantees. Valve says the first tab in the Steam Store shows only games that are great on Steam Deck, and explains that its review process continues as games and updates publish. Check each recommended game’s live Steam store page before buying or installing, since labels can change.
