The quest also has documented gift-box and Lucky Wheel tasks; their exact order within the quest is not established.
Unlock the quest and enter the Mirror Lair
The Ghost in the Portrait is the third quest in Oogie Boogie’s six-week 2026 Season of Scares event and requires completion of The Oogie Boogie Contract. To begin Oogie Boogie’s quests, the official event announcement says you need to have unlocked the Peaceful Meadow, Scrooge McDuck’s Store, and Chez Remy. Watch your Mail and go to Scrooge McDuck’s Store when the quest is available; enter the Mirror Lair from there. The quest schedule lists this installment for October 7, 2026. Find and water the five Zero motifs
Look for five Zero motifs around the Mirror Lair. Water each one with your Watering Can to collect five Zero Essence. The community item reference lists these locations:
- On the right-hand window display.
- Behind the right side of the staircase.
- On the table in the right-side furniture display.
- Behind the skeleton display beside the vault door.
- On the stacked dice across from the skeleton display.
If you are missing one, check each listed spot rather than searching only the floor: the motifs are placed on displays and behind objects as well. Zero Essence locations.

Craft and use Real Ghostly Paint Thinner
- Take the five Zero Essence to a crafting station and combine them to make one Real Ghostly Paint Thinner.
- Use the paint thinner from your inventory to upgrade the Watering Can.
- Use the upgraded Watering Can on the painting trapping Zero.
The item reference documents this sequence as the use of the essence and paint thinner. Real Ghostly Paint Thinner.
Complete the other documented Mirror Lair tasks
Two additional quest-item references describe tasks in the lair. Because the quest entry does not provide a full objective script, treat these as documented tasks rather than a confirmed order relative to the Zero-painting steps.

- Lucky Wheel Cogs: Smash the Lucky Wheel with your Pickaxe to collect five Lucky Wheel Cogs. The cogs remain in your inventory after the quest. Lucky Wheel Cogs.
Know the event cutoff and reward
The official announcement schedules the six weekly quests for September 23, September 30, October 7, October 14, October 21, and October 28, 2026. It says you must begin the first Oogie Boogie quest before November 4, 2026, to keep the chain; if you start before then, you can complete its remaining quests later at your own pace. The announcement describes Zero as a permanent companion unlock through event progression, and the quest entry lists unlocking Zero as this quest’s reward. Official event announcement; quest entry.
