Choose a GPU by checking how it performs in the specific path-traced games, resolution, and settings you plan to use—not by relying on a generic “ray tracing capable” label. Compare dedicated ray-tracing hardware, VRAM, reconstruction and frame-generation support, and whether the exact card fits your PC’s power and physical requirements. Treat frame rates that include generated frames separately from native rendering performance.
Why path tracing can be demanding
Path tracing simulates light across multiple bounces, capturing indirect lighting as well as direct effects. It uses ray tracing as part of a broader lighting simulation, and can place a heavier workload on a GPU than games that use ray tracing for only selected effects. NVIDIA notes that different ray-tracing techniques have different performance requirements, so “ray tracing” by itself does not tell you how demanding a game mode will be.
Check whether a game offers the specific mode you mean: a title’s partial ray-traced reflections or shadows are not equivalent to a full-scene path-tracing or full-ray-tracing mode. Then compare performance in that mode, rather than using a result from a different rendering mode as a proxy. NVIDIA’s explanation of real-time ray tracing describes path tracing as a larger light-simulation system that uses ray tracing as one component.
Compare GPUs against your games and display
There is no universal minimum GPU established here for path-traced games. The experience depends on the game, the path-tracing implementation, resolution, image-quality settings, and whether reconstruction or frame generation is enabled. Compare cards using examples that match your intended use as closely as possible.

- Game and mode: Confirm that the title has the path-tracing or full-ray-tracing setting you want, and that the benchmark uses it.
- Resolution and quality: Look for results at your target resolution and settings. A 1440p result does not establish how the same GPU will perform at 4K.
- Rendering features: Note whether upscaling, Ray Reconstruction, or frame generation is enabled. These affect the output and make results different from native rendering without those features.
- Evidence: Prefer independent tests for a buying comparison when available, and keep vendor-reported figures labeled as vendor results.
What to compare on the GPU itself
Dedicated ray-tracing acceleration
Check whether the GPU has dedicated hardware for ray-tracing work. NVIDIA says its RT Cores accelerate bounding-volume hierarchy traversal and ray/triangle intersection calculations. That is a relevant capability, but the presence or count of such cores alone does not predict how a card will perform in a particular game; architecture, the game’s implementation, and the rest of the GPU matter too.
VRAM capacity
Record the card’s memory capacity and type, then compare candidates on the basis of the games and settings you intend to run. The available specifications do not establish a universal VRAM threshold for path tracing, so capacity should be treated as one part of the comparison rather than a stand-alone guarantee of performance.

Upscaling, reconstruction, and frame generation
These are distinct features, not synonyms for faster native rendering. NVIDIA describes DLSS Super Resolution as image reconstruction and Ray Reconstruction as a feature for intensive ray-traced scenes; its support information distinguishes features by GPU generation. Check both that the GPU supports the feature and that the particular game implements it. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview provides its feature descriptions and support information.
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames. When a benchmark or vendor example includes generated frames, do not read its displayed FPS as the number of frames conventionally rendered by the GPU. The performance figure is meaningful only with its feature settings attached.

Power, dimensions, and the exact card model
Check the exact board-partner model you plan to buy, not just the GPU family name. Card dimensions and specifications can vary between manufacturers. Confirm that it fits your case and that your power supply meets the manufacturer’s requirements for that specific card.

The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti illustrates the comparison process; its specifications do not make it a universal recommendation. NVIDIA lists fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, 16 GB of GDDR7, and DLSS 4 features including Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation. For its reference card, NVIDIA lists 300 W total graphics power and a 750 W required system power. The page cautions that add-in-card manufacturers’ specifications may vary, so verify the board-partner card before purchase. NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 family specifications are the source for those figures.

NVIDIA reported up to 191 FPS at 2560×1440 and up to 149 FPS at 4K for the RTX 5070 Ti in Alan Wake 2, Black Myth: Wukong, and Cyberpunk 2077 with full ray tracing and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. These are vendor-reported results, not independent tests or native-rendering frame rates. Use them as examples of the stated configuration, not as a direct prediction for another game or settings combination. NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 Ti announcement gives the test context.
NVIDIA also reports PRAGMATA results with path tracing, Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution, and Multi Frame Generation at several resolutions. In that game, NVIDIA says Ray Reconstruction is automatically enabled when path tracing is activated on GeForce RTX GPUs. These are game- and feature-specific vendor examples; they do not establish a general GPU ranking. NVIDIA’s PRAGMATA announcement describes the configuration.
