Once you finish The Ghost in the Portrait, Zero is free and available as a companion. The quest is the third of six weekly Oogie Boogie event stages, so the next step is to return when Rescue Mission unlocks on October 14, 2026. You do not need to repeat the portrait objectives or find an immediate follow-up quest.
What completing the quest unlocks
The quest ends after you free Zero and confront Oogie Boogie. Zero is the immediate reward: you can now have him accompany you as a companion. Oogie Boogie’s storyline is not finished, however; his event questline continues through the remaining weekly stages.
When the next Oogie Boogie quest begins
The official event schedule releases one new challenge each week. After The Ghost in the Portrait, the remaining scheduled quests are:
| Stage | Scheduled date | Quest |
|---|---|---|
| Week 4 | October 14, 2026 | Rescue Mission |
| Week 5 | October 21, 2026 | Let the Games Begin |
| Week 6 | October 28, 2026 | Oogie Boogie’s Big Game |
These are scheduled release dates, not quests that completing the portrait stage makes available early. If you have finished the current stage and cannot see Rescue Mission yet, wait for its scheduled release.

How the event cutoff affects your progress
The event is a six-week Oogie Boogie storyline. Disney Dreamlight Valley says players who begin the first Oogie Boogie quest before November 4, 2026 can complete the remaining quests at their own pace. After November 4, Oogie Boogie leaves the Valley, but players who started the first quest before the cutoff can still finish the questline and unlock him and Zero. See the official Disney Dreamlight Valley announcement for the event rules and schedule.
What to do with the Lucky Wheel Cogs
Keep the five Lucky Wheel Cogs you collected during the quest. Their use in a later stage has not been confirmed, so there is no established reason to discard or use them now.

What you have already done in this quest
If you are checking whether the quest is complete, its objectives lead from sabotaging Oogie Boogie’s Lucky Wheel to freeing Zero:
- Collect five Zero Essence from drawings in the Mirror Lair.
- Craft Real Ghostly Paint Thinner at a crafting station.
- Use the paint thinner from your inventory to upgrade the Royal Watering Can.
- Water the correct portrait, then free Zero and confront Oogie Boogie.
