To collect packed ice or blue ice, mine it with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. Look for packed ice in icebergs in frozen oceans; check the lower, sometimes underwater parts of an iceberg for blue ice. You can also craft both blocks, starting with regular ice.
How to get packed ice
- Travel to a frozen ocean or deep frozen ocean and find an iceberg. Packed ice also has other reported generation locations, including ice spikes, frozen peaks, village structures, and ancient cities.
- Mine the block with a Silk Touch tool. A pickaxe is the quick mining choice. Without Silk Touch, packed ice breaks without dropping itself.
If you have plenty of regular ice, craft it into packed ice instead of searching for an iceberg. Regular ice must be collected with Silk Touch; packed ice itself does not turn into water when broken.
A wandering trader may offer packed ice for emeralds, but the offer is not guaranteed, so treat it as an occasional opportunity rather than a reliable supply.
How to get blue ice
- Search for icebergs in frozen oceans and deep frozen oceans. Blue ice commonly appears near the lower portions of packed-ice icebergs, including at or below the waterline.
- Mine blue ice with a Silk Touch tool. Without Silk Touch, it breaks without dropping the block.
You can craft blue ice from packed ice. The full crafting chain takes 81 regular ice blocks to produce one blue ice block: first convert regular ice into packed ice, then convert packed ice into blue ice.
