Ice Caves are a newly documented cave biome in Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3; “Snowy Caves” is not identified as a separate official cave-biome name in the official sources reviewed. Ice Caves can generate beneath colder Overworld biomes, but that is a clue—not a guarantee or a precise location. The feature is documented for a Java snapshot, not established here as part of a stable release or available in Bedrock.
Ice Caves vs. Snowy Caves at a glance
| Question | Ice Caves | “Snowy Caves” |
|---|---|---|
| Official cave-biome name? | Yes. Mojang lists Ice Caves as a new cave biome in Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3, published October 6, 2026. Official snapshot changelog. | The official sources reviewed do not identify Snowy Caves as a distinct cave biome. Snowy slopes and groves are surface biomes in Mojang’s 1.18 materials. Mojang’s 1.18 announcement; Minecraft Help biome overview. |
| Edition and version | Documented in a Java snapshot; stable Java and Bedrock availability are not established by the cited notes. | No separate official biome version or edition is established by the sources reviewed. |
| Where to look | Can generate under colder Overworld biomes. Mojang gives no specific surface-biome list, coordinates, or guaranteed entrance. | No official generation location is documented for a separate biome by this name. |
| Appearance and contents | Mainly packed ice and calcite, with ceiling icicles, occasional ground snow patches, and ice crystals. | “Snowy cave” may be a visual description, but the reviewed sources do not define its blocks or features as an official biome. |
| Mobs and hazards | Normal cave mobs may spawn, along with Strays and Frostbites. Frostbites can inflict Freezing. | No distinct mob list or hazard is documented for an official Snowy Caves biome. |
Where to find Ice Caves
Mojang’s location clue is that Ice Caves “can generate under the colder biomes in the Overworld,” according to the Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3 changelog. Treat “can generate” literally: it describes a possibility, not a promise that every cold biome has an Ice Cave beneath it.
- Use the Java snapshot where the feature is documented. The source identifies Ice Caves in Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3, published October 6, 2026. It does not establish stable-release or Bedrock availability.
- Explore below colder Overworld biomes. Search natural cave openings and connected cave systems beneath colder regions. The notes do not name an exact list of qualifying surface biomes.
- Look for the biome’s block and shape cues. Packed ice and calcite form most of the cave. Icicles hang from ceilings, while large packed-ice icicles can form on the ground and ceiling. Snow patches may appear on the ground, and ice crystals occasionally generate there.
Mojang gives no Y-level, seed, or guaranteed route to an Ice Cave in the snapshot notes, so digging under any particular snowy patch cannot be promised to find one. The older Caves & Cliffs: Part II announcement says cave biomes may sometimes generate directly below surface biomes; that general explanation does not make Ice Cave placement certain.
What an Ice Cave looks like and contains
The snapshot describes Ice Caves as consisting mainly of packed ice and calcite. Icicles provide the most obvious overhead cue, but the floor and ceiling can also have large packed-ice formations. Occasional snow patches and ground-level ice crystals add visual variety; the notes do not say every Ice Cave contains each feature.

- Ores: They occur in pockets of stone and deepslate.
- Glow lichen: It does not generate in the biome.
- Icicles: The snapshot describes them as speleothem-like blocks; naturally growing downward-pointing icicles can reach five blocks in length.
- Ice crystals: These light-emitting blocks can be placed in any direction and break if their support block is removed.
In this snapshot, nearby light sources can break pointed blocks. If you are exploring or decorating an Ice Cave, account for that when placing lights near icicles.
Mobs and freezing hazards
Ice Caves can contain the mobs that normally spawn in caves, plus Strays and Frostbites. The snapshot’s new Frostbite attacks at close range with melee strikes that apply the Freezing effect; at range, it throws Ice Balls.

Leather armor protects against freezing in the same way it does with Powder Snow, but it does not stop the Freezing effect from being applied or remove it. Do not treat leather as immunity to the effect.
Are Snowy Caves a real Minecraft biome?
The official material cited here does not establish “Snowy Caves” as a separate official cave-biome name. Mojang’s 1.18 announcement discusses surface biomes such as snowy slopes and groves, alongside cave biomes such as lush and dripstone caves. Minecraft Help also lists established cave-biome names such as dripstone caves. Those references help distinguish a snowy surface biome from a cave biome, but they do not prove that the phrase could never appear in an add-on, a future update, a different edition, or a player’s visual description.

So if someone says “snowy cave,” they may mean a cave that looks snow-covered rather than a formally named biome. If they mean a particular world, add-on, edition, or version, that context matters.
