How to Fix Low FPS and Stuttering With Path Tracing Enabled

Low FPS and intermittent stutter have different causes. Use targeted settings changes and frame-time clues to find out whether path tracing load, shader compilation, memory pressure or another bottleneck is responsible.

If path tracing makes a game run slowly, first reduce its rendering workload; if the game hitches intermittently, investigate frame-time spikes and what triggers them. Those are different problems, so change one setting at a time and compare the same scene before deciding whether hardware is the limit.

First, identify whether it is low FPS or stutter

A consistently low frame rate usually points to sustained rendering load: the GPU is taking too long to produce frames. Stutter is different: the game may run smoothly much of the time but pause or deliver uneven frames intermittently. NVIDIA’s technical analysis identifies shader compilation, video-memory oversubscription, resource management and queued frames among possible causes of uneven frame times (NVIDIA’s micro-stuttering analysis).

Before changing anything, note the game, GPU, CPU, resolution, path-tracing setting, upscaler and frame-generation state. Also record whether performance is steadily slow or hitches at particular moments. Compare the same location or sequence after each single change; otherwise, it is hard to tell which adjustment helped.

Fix consistently low frame rates

  1. Lower the path-tracing or ray-tracing level. If the game offers multiple levels, test the next lower one first. This directly reduces the workload most closely associated with the problem.
  2. Reduce output resolution. Test a lower resolution and compare image quality, responsiveness and performance in the same scene.
  3. Try a game-supported Super Resolution mode. NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution input. Available modes and results depend on the game’s integration and version; NVIDIA’s DLSS overview and gaming guide describe the technology and its roles.

Judge the change by more than the FPS counter. A setting that raises frame rate but makes the image unacceptable or controls feel less responsive may not be the right trade-off.

Understand what frame generation changes

Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames; it does not mean the game is rendering that many base frames. Compare frame pacing and input responsiveness as well as the displayed counter. NVIDIA describes Frame Generation as distinct from Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction in its DLSS feature overview.

Test it separately, only if the game and hardware support it. NVIDIA says its Multi Frame Generation can generate up to five frames per rendered frame on GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. That is a feature limit, not a measured or guaranteed playable frame rate; results depend on the specific game and system.

NVIDIA’s 2022 DLSS 3 announcement advertised “up to 4x” frame rates versus rendering without DLSS. Treat that as a dated vendor claim, not an expectation for an individual game or PC (NVIDIA’s 2022 announcement). NVIDIA also said Frame Generation can boost rates when a game is CPU-bottlenecked; that is a description of its technology, not a guarantee that it will resolve every CPU-limited hitch.

There is a specific platform caveat: NVIDIA’s guide warns Linux users not to enable native DLSS Frame Generation and Smooth Motion together because they compete. This warning concerns those two methods; it should not be generalized to every frame-generation feature.

Track down intermittent hitches

Hitches on the first visit to a scene

Shader compilation can cause stuttering, including on a first visit to content or after an update. NVIDIA’s Control Panel reference says, “Shader compiles are normally performed each time a game runs and are a common cause of game-play stuttering.” It also explains that the shader cache can avoid recompiling the same shaders on later runs (NVIDIA Control Panel reference). If a location hitches once and is smoother on a later pass, compilation or loading activity may be involved. Do not repeatedly clear the shader cache as a generic fix.

Hitches during traversal or at recurring moments

Watch for a pattern: does the hitch occur while moving into a new area, when effects appear, or every few seconds? Those clues can help distinguish shader or resource activity from sustained rendering pressure. Check the game’s performance or VRAM overlay if available. If video-memory use appears constrained, close unnecessary GPU-heavy applications and test lower texture or rendering settings. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes.

Hitches despite acceptable average FPS

An average FPS figure can hide uneven frame times. If the game’s own overlay or a frame-time graph is available, look for spikes at the moments you feel a hitch. NVIDIA’s stutter analysis discusses delayed frames and frame-time investigation; its Nsight tooling is an advanced diagnostic option, not a requirement for ordinary troubleshooting.

Separate frame pacing from display tearing

If frame delivery seems uneven, consider whether the visible problem is actually tearing—horizontal breaks in the image—or stutter from inconsistent frame times. A compatible variable-refresh display may reduce tearing or some presentation artifacts, but it cannot reduce path tracing’s rendering workload or make the GPU produce more frames. NVIDIA’s Control Panel reference covers the related display settings.

Check updates and decide whether hardware is the bottleneck

If the issue started after a game or graphics-driver update, install available updates through official channels. If it began immediately after a driver change, compare with a previously stable setup where feasible. There is no universally best driver version established for every path-traced game, so use game-specific guidance rather than choosing a version on a blanket recommendation.

Consider an upgrade only after the tests point to a GPU limitation and you have checked the official requirements for the named game. Requirements and feature support vary by title. For example, NVIDIA’s RTXPT project specifies a DXR-capable GPU for that project, but that is not a universal requirement for every game with path tracing (RTXPT project requirements). There is no single GPU tier or expected FPS that can be prescribed without knowing the game, resolution and system.

For advice tailored to a specific setup, the useful details are the game, GPU, CPU, resolution, driver version, path-tracing setting, upscaler and whether frame generation is enabled.
