Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If PlayStation Portal Remote Play is lagging, stuttering, or disconnecting, first update the Portal and check its network status while the problem is happening. Then isolate the connection: test other devices on Wi-Fi, reduce network activity, improve the Portal’s signal, and—if possible—connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet. Sony’s speed recommendations are useful guidelines, but meeting them alone cannot guarantee a stable, low-latency session.
1. Update the Portal and check its network status
- Install available system software: Follow PlayStation’s PS Portal system software update instructions. PlayStation advises updating before troubleshooting. The version page listed 6.0.1 when checked on October 7, 2026; that version can change, so check the Portal for the latest update rather than treating 6.0.1 as permanently current. More than one update may be needed if the device is several versions behind.
- Restart the Portal after updating, then reconnect to Remote Play.
- Check the connection during a bad session: Open the Portal’s Quick Menu, choose Troubleshoot > Show Network Status, and note what it reports while the lag or stuttering is occurring. This helps distinguish a connection problem from a game-specific issue; it does not by itself identify the cause.
PlayStation also lists Restore Licence in the Quick Menu as a possible gameplay troubleshooting step while streaming a game. It is a secondary option for gameplay trouble, not a fix for weak or unstable Wi-Fi. See PlayStation’s PS Portal troubleshooting guidance.

2. Find out whether the problem is Wi-Fi or the Portal
Test another phone, computer, or console on the same Wi-Fi. If those devices also cannot connect, the issue may be with the router or internet service; PlayStation advises contacting your internet service provider when Wi-Fi is unavailable on other devices. If they work but the Portal does not, check the Portal’s network connection and signal instead.
- On the Portal, open Quick Menu > Settings > Network and inspect the Wi-Fi connection.
- Move closer to the router, then test again. Walls and other obstacles can weaken the Portal-to-router wireless link.
- During Remote Play, use Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status to check the connection while the symptom is present.
A failure to join Wi-Fi and poor gameplay after connecting are different problems. If the Portal cannot join a network, focus on Wi-Fi availability and network settings. If it connects but gameplay stutters, also check signal quality, competing network use, and the PS5’s connection to the router. PlayStation’s troubleshooting steps cover these connection points but do not give one universal threshold that identifies the cause in every home. See the Portal troubleshooting page and the PS Portal user guide and Remote Play setup.

3. Reduce Wi-Fi congestion and improve the connection
Pause competing network activity
Pause downloads on devices sharing the network and temporarily stop other high-bandwidth activity. Test the Portal again with fewer devices competing for the connection. This is a practical way to see whether congestion is contributing to the problem; it does not require changing your internet plan.
Improve the Portal’s wireless signal
- Play nearer the router and reduce obstacles between it and the Portal.
- Where available, connect the Portal using 5 GHz Wi-Fi. PlayStation recommends this band for the Portal where available.
- If your PS5 is also using Wi-Fi, PlayStation recommends connecting the Portal to the same network. Router band steering can move devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; PlayStation’s Spanish network setup guidance suggests disabling automatic band steering only if that behavior is causing the device to switch bands.
Do not change router settings automatically: band names, controls, and behavior vary by router. PlayStation’s Portal setup guidance covers network setup, while the troubleshooting page recommends testing the PS5 on a wired connection if instability persists.

Test Ethernet for the PS5
Connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable, then test Remote Play again. This improves or isolates the PS5-to-router connection; the Portal itself still connects over Wi-Fi, so Ethernet does not remove the Portal’s wireless link. A Cat 6 cable is one suitable option, but PlayStation’s guidance is to test a wired PS5 connection, not to require a particular cable category.
Use speed figures as guidelines, not a lag guarantee
PlayStation’s Remote Play support gives 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. These are throughput guidelines. A speed test can show whether the connection reaches those rates, but it does not establish low latency, consistent Wi-Fi signal, or freedom from congestion. If speeds meet the recommendation and stuttering continues, keep troubleshooting connection stability rather than assuming a faster plan will solve it. See PlayStation’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting guidance.

4. Check PS5 Remote Play and wake settings
If the Portal cannot find or connect to the PS5—especially when starting from Rest Mode—confirm the console and account setup:
- The PS5 is online, and the Portal and PS5 use the same PlayStation account.
- On PS5, Remote Play is enabled at Settings > System > Remote Play.
- If you need to wake the console from Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
Test the Portal near the PS5 first, then try from outside the home if that is where the connection fails. PlayStation notes that the Portal may not find or connect to a console if it has been a while since the last sign-in. See the PS Portal user guide and Remote Play setup.

5. Troubleshoot Wi-Fi error 0x8320011A
If the Portal displays error 0x8320011A, use the code-specific checks rather than treating it as ordinary gameplay stutter:
- Check whether other devices can connect to the same Wi-Fi.
- Review the Portal’s network settings and selected access point.
- Temporarily disconnect some devices from the access point, then retry.
- If the error remains, test the Portal on another Wi-Fi network.
- Record the exact error code and consult PlayStation’s 0x8320011A support page or its PS Portal error-code index.
When to contact PlayStation Support
If updating, checking the network, reducing congestion, and verifying the PS5 setup do not resolve the issue, use the relevant PlayStation support page or PlayStation Repairs and support. Include any displayed error code and describe whether other devices work on the same Wi-Fi, whether the Portal can connect near the router, and whether wiring the PS5 changed the result. Those details help distinguish a Portal Wi-Fi problem from a console or broader network issue.
