The key to clearing it is to track the correct Hive runes, manage Pressure Resistance by moving bubble to bubble, and complete each Vestige deposit in the right order. Check the live activity card before launching for current Power, modifiers, difficulty, and rewards.
Before You Start
Choose whether your goal is a Standard or Master clear, a solo or solo-flawless run, hidden chests, Memories of Darkness, or The Navigator catalyst. The live activity card is authoritative for current activity details and reward availability; do not rely on old launch-era Power or modifier requirements.
In underwater sections, let Pressure Resistance fully refill at each air bubble before moving on. Bubbles are shared and refill temporarily when touched, so fireteams should stagger arrivals. Agree on clear callouts and name Oryx’s body parts directly in the final encounter so left and right are not confused by player perspective.
1. Break the Ritual
At the sealed door, defeat the Hive and Soulfire Binder Ogre to open the route into the forest. The encounter is a repeated rune-and-Vestige chain: track one rune through three combat sites, then deposit the final Lightbearer’s Vestige at the statue that matches that rune.

- At each of the first three sites, identify the airborne Hive rune and confirm it with your fireteam. Clear the enemies and follow the green trail to the next site.
- At the third site, defeat the Lucent Hive Lightbearer. Assign one player to crush its Ghost; that player receives the timed Vestige of Light. Use the HUD timer as your guide.
- Return to the sealed door, defeat the Veilweaver Wizard, and interact with the Deepsight illusion to reveal the statues.
- Have the Vestige carrier deposit at the statue matching the rune tracked across the three sites. A wrong deposit kills the carrier and does not advance the encounter.
- Repeat the rune chain until four correct deposits open the door.
Call out the rune, confirm it, identify who will finish the Ghost, and have the carrier communicate the timer. In solo play, perform these roles in sequence.
Traverse the Arcology
Move through the Drilling Platform interiors using visible catwalks and structures rather than making blind drops. In underwater sections, travel from bubble to bubble and wait for Pressure Resistance to refill fully before leaving. Shared bubbles refill temporarily when touched, so stagger arrivals in a group. Clear dry Hive rooms before returning underwater; slow underwater revives can leave the surviving player without a safe refill. Follow the pressurized route and landmarks toward the circular fountain arena.
2. Defeat Ecthar, the Shield of Savathûn
Ecthar’s mechanic is a three-rune circuit followed by three Vestige deposits. The third deposit summons a Wellkeeper Knight; killing it creates the pool needed to break Ecthar’s shield and start damage.

- At the fountain, defeat the praying Acolytes, Blistered Knights, and Keeper of the Deep Ogre.
- Use Deepsight beside the fountain and record the three illuminated runes on the side walls.
- Send a runner into the underwater maze to touch only those three symbols. Avoid Ecthar and refill Pressure Resistance along the bubble circuit. Each correct rune summons a Lightbearer Wizard in the arena above.
- Defeat each Wizard and crush its Ghost to receive a Vestige of Light. Deposit the three Vestiges at the three statues. These statues are progress sockets, not rune-matched choices.
- The third deposit summons the Wellkeeper Knight. Kill it, then stand in the luminous pool it leaves to break Ecthar’s shield.
- Damage Ecthar, then repeat the mechanic cycle as needed.
Teams can process Wizards in parallel or use a more serialized approach. Call out who has each Vestige and which deposits are complete. For solo play, stabilize the arena and manage the underwater circuit carefully before taking on the next step.

After Ecthar, follow the underwater route into the Hive ship. In the long platform room, clear Shriekers before attempting exposed jumps. The far raised pavilion near the advancing Ogre is a landmark for the second hidden chest and the third Navigator catalyst statue. Before the final encounter, agree on Oryx’s anatomical body-part names so callouts cannot be mistaken for player-relative directions.
3. Defeat Šimmumah ur-Nokru, Lucent Necromancer
Šimmumah’s mechanic connects three chamber runes to three active ritual sites on Oryx’s body. Complete the two non-Heart sites first and the Heart last; after matching and depositing the Vestiges, stand in the final ritual pool to break her overshield. Repeat the cycle when she becomes immune, and crush her Ghost after the kill.

- Crush the Ghost at the central ritual to start the encounter. Use Deepsight to reveal the three active ritual sites on Oryx’s corpse. The Heart is active every cycle.
- At each site, stand in its ritual ring as Vorlog is killed; this draws Šimmumah to that site. Use the floating lens to frame the distant Hive mark and reveal the rune associated with the body site.
- Record the rune for each site. Complete the two non-Heart sites first, then the Heart. Šimmumah begins at the Heart, so starting there may not move her and is less reliable.
- Enter the flooded side chambers. Read each chamber’s rune, defeat its Lightbearer, crush its Ghost, and carry the Vestige back.
- Reacquire Deepsight and deposit each Vestige at the body site bearing the matching rune. The final deposit determines the initial shield-break and damage position.
- Stand in the completed ritual pool to damage Šimmumah’s overshield. Once it breaks, relocate for cover or a better angle as needed, track the airborne boss, and clear moths.
- When immunity returns, repeat the full mechanic cycle. When Šimmumah reaches zero health, crush her Ghost to complete the dungeon.
Use clear body-part names in team callouts and confirm each rune before carrying a Vestige. The final deposit controls where the initial damage opportunity begins, so plan positioning rather than assuming the pool is a safe place to remain.
Optional Collectibles and Rewards
The dungeon has twelve Memories of Darkness and two hidden chests. The final Memory route has a mission-end timer, and two Memories have little safe stopping time between them, so plan the route before collecting them.
The Navigator is an Exotic trace rifle in the final encounter loot pool, but it is not guaranteed on an ordinary clear. Its catalyst route requires at least one player to bring The Navigator into a normal dungeon run and complete three statue stages in one uninterrupted instance; the listed catalyst objective is 700 target defeats with The Navigator. The guide does not cover conflicting reports about Rite of the Nine catalyst behavior.

How many encounters are in Ghosts of the Deep?
There are three encounters: Break the Ritual, Ecthar, and Šimmumah ur-Nokru.
How do you beat Ecthar?
Reveal and touch the three wall runes underwater, defeat the resulting Lightbearer Wizards and crush their Ghosts, then deposit all three Vestiges at the statues. Kill the Wellkeeper Knight summoned by the third deposit and stand in its pool to break Ecthar’s shield.
