For most new players, start with the Tutorial or Practice Range, then try Practice Vs. AI before joining Quick Match. That sequence offers a way to learn controls, hero abilities and objective flow before facing human teams. PvE is a good alternative if you want cooperative, mission-based play and an event is available; Competitive is best saved for when you want ranked progression. This is a practical recommendation based on the modes’ described purposes, not a measured comparison of which teaches beginners faster.
How PvE and PvP differ in Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals is presented by its publisher as a team-based PvP shooter. In the catalogued PvP modes, teams pursue objectives against other players. PvE replaces the opposing team with AI enemies and mission goals. The mode catalog describes PvE missions for one to four players, including objectives such as fighting Ultron and his mechanical forces.
| What you want | Mode to consider | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Learn the controls and heroes | Tutorials or Practice Range | Movement, shooting, hero abilities, classes and Team-Up Abilities |
| Try a match against bots | Practice Vs. AI | Team play against AI opponents at varying difficulty |
| Play objective-based matches against people | Quick Match | Two six-player teams compete around objectives |
| Work toward a rank | Competitive | Objective-based team PvP with rank progression |
| Complete a cooperative mission | PvE event, if available | One-to-four-player mission play against AI enemies; specific events may rotate |
The mode descriptions come from the Marvel Rivals mode catalog. It lists the PvE formats, but does not establish which ones are live on October 7, 2026. Check the in-game mode selector before planning around a particular event. The official October 1, 2026 patch notes do not identify the current PvE rotation.
What should new players do first?
- Complete the Tutorial. Use it to get familiar with movement and shooting basics.
- Visit the Practice Range and Hero Tutorials. Try abilities and Team-Up Abilities, and learn how heroes’ classes work.
- Play Practice Vs. AI. Use bot matches to get a feel for objectives and team flow before queueing against people. The mode catalog describes bots at varying difficulty.
- Move to Quick Match when ready. This gives you objective-based team PvP without making ranked progression the point of the match.
- Choose Competitive if rank is your goal. It is the ranked-progression option, rather than the default first stop for a new player.
The April 2025 patch notes documented a first-time-player reminder for default sensitivity, vibration and trigger settings. That is a historical onboarding feature, not a confirmed current menu path; check your settings in-game rather than relying on those notes for today’s interface.

Is PvE better for learning?
Not necessarily. PvE offers mission-focused cooperative play, while the tutorials, Practice Range and Practice Vs. AI are the documented tools specifically suited to learning mechanics before human matches. The available sources do not compare beginner success, stress, enjoyment or learning speed between PvE and PvP, so there is no evidence-based basis to call PvE easier or categorically better for learning.
If you enjoy working with other players toward a mission objective, choose PvE when the event selector shows an available mission. If your goal is to learn how objectives and team fights work in the game’s central PvP format, use Practice Vs. AI and then Quick Match.

Does Marvel Rivals have PvE?
Yes: the mode catalog lists one-to-four-player PvE mission experiences, including Path to Doomsday: Avengers: Age of Ultron and a Marvel Zombies mode. These entries show that PvE exists in the game’s mode offerings, but they do not confirm that either event is available in the live rotation on a given day. Check the in-game selector for current availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to buy the game to try either mode?
No physical game purchase is indicated: the publisher describes Marvel Rivals as free to play. Its December 2024 launch announcement said heroes were unlocked and free to play at launch and beyond; that historical statement does not mean every cosmetic or optional purchase is free today. The announcement listed Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games Store and the official website. The official release FAQ also lists Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic Store and Loading Bay, and advises choosing the server with the lowest latency for matchmaking. Platform details can change, so consult the current official information for your system.
