Choose PlayStation Portal if you want a dedicated screen and built-in PlayStation controls for playing PS5 games remotely. Choose Backbone One if you want to attach a controller to a compatible phone and use it for PS Remote Play, mobile games, and supported cloud services. They are different kinds of devices, not interchangeable handhelds. Either way, streamed play depends on your network, and no side-by-side latency test establishes that one is faster.

Which is better for your kind of remote play?

Your priority Better starting choice Why
A dedicated display with integrated PlayStation controls PlayStation Portal Portal is a standalone remote player with an 8-inch screen and selected DualSense features.
Using a phone you already own Backbone One It attaches to a compatible phone; connector, fit, and software support depend on the exact model and phone.
Remote Play from a PS4 Backbone One with a compatible mobile device and app, or another supported Remote Play device Portal connects to PS5, not PS4. Sony lists mobile devices among the ways to use Remote Play. Sony’s PS4 Remote Play guidance.
Controller-compatible mobile games or other supported gaming services Backbone One Backbone describes support for compatible mobile games, console and PC Remote Play, and cloud services; support varies by service and device.
Playing eligible PlayStation cloud-streamed games without a Remote Play session from your own PS5 PlayStation Portal, if you meet the subscription and title requirements Sony offers Portal cloud streaming for eligible titles with PlayStation Plus Premium, subject to region and catalog availability.

What each device actually does

PlayStation Portal is a dedicated PS5 remote player

Portal supplies its own 8-inch 1080p LCD screen and integrated controls. Sony says the display can deliver up to 60 frames per second and that supported games can use DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. Those are stated product capabilities, not a guarantee that every game or network will deliver the same experience. Sony’s PlayStation Portal and Remote Play information.

For console Remote Play, Portal connects to a PS5 console; it does not support PS4. The PS5 needs broadband access, an initial pairing, and must be on or in Rest Mode. Compatible games are required. Sony says Remote Play on Portal does not require PlayStation Plus, although a multiplayer game may require the membership it specifies.

Backbone One turns a compatible phone into a controller setup

Backbone One is a phone-mounted controller, not a handheld with its own screen. The phone runs the game or Remote Play app, so the experience depends on that phone’s display, battery, operating system, fit, and app/service compatibility. Backbone describes its controller as plug-and-play through the phone’s port; that manufacturer wording is not an independent performance measurement.

And with Backbone+, you can unlock free instant access to a wide variety of games, enhancing your experience by letting you play immediately without paying for extra features.
  • PLAY ANYWHERE, ANYTIME: With its low-latency USB-C link, this phone gaming controller avoids charging needs and minimizes input delay. Use the 3.5mm audio jack or Bluetooth through your phone for immersive sound, and enjoy reliable gameplay anywhere you take it.

Backbone offers different editions and connector variants. Match the controller’s Lightning or USB-C connection to the phone, and check the current phone and case fit before buying. Features can differ between variants; for example, Backbone’s product listing describes magnetic adapters and pass-through charging for particular models rather than establishing that every version has identical features. Check console, phone, and service compatibility first

For PlayStation Portal

  • Console: PS5 is required for console Remote Play; PS4 is unsupported on Portal.
  • Network: Sony states a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. These are Sony’s guidance, not a promise of a particular frame rate or latency; network quality affects play quality.
  • Audio: Portal supports wired audio through a 3.5 mm jack and wireless PlayStation Link audio devices. Do not assume ordinary Bluetooth audio support.
  • Media: PS5 Media tab apps are not supported through Portal Remote Play.
  • Cloud streaming: This is separate from Remote Play from your own console. Sony says it requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited to eligible titles and regions; catalog and availability can change. Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming information.

For Backbone One

  • Phone and port: Choose the connector that matches the phone and verify the exact model’s fit, especially if you use a case.
  • Operating system: Sony lists iOS 15 or later for iPhones using Backbone One PlayStation Edition, and Android 10 or later for Android phones with that edition. Confirm current support for your specific phone and software before purchase. Sony’s Remote Play on mobile devices guidance.
  • Apps and services: A controller cannot make an unsupported game or service compatible. Check that the games and streaming or Remote Play apps you plan to use support your phone and controller.

Will one have less lag?

There is no side-by-side latency evidence here that shows Portal or Backbone One is faster. Portal streams to its own display; Backbone relies on a phone and the relevant app. In either setup, the console or cloud service, internet connection, home Wi-Fi, and device conditions matter. Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Portal play experience and says network quality affects play quality, but that recommendation does not establish a latency result or guarantee smooth play.

Compare the total cost, not just the controller

Backbone One requires a suitable phone, which may make it the more economical choice if you already own a compatible device. If you do not, include the cost of the phone in the comparison. Portal supplies its own display and controls, but its current local price was not established in the cited Sony material. At the time of the cited Backbone product-page listing, Backbone displayed $99.99 for a Lightning (2nd Gen) model and marked that listing sold out; that is one listing, not a current market-wide price or a price for every edition. Check local pricing, stock, connector, and included accessories before buying. Backbone One product listing.
