Then narrow your choice by how each hero moves, fights, survives, and uses their kit. Role is a starting point—not a guarantee that every hero in it will feel right.
What do the three Overwatch roles do?
Blizzard groups heroes into Tank, Damage, and Support. These labels describe broad team functions; the individual heroes within each role can still play very differently. Blizzard’s hero descriptions are a useful starting point.
Tank: take pressure and contest space
Tank heroes soak up damage and can break fortified positions, including tightly grouped enemies and narrow chokepoints. Consider Tank if you enjoy drawing pressure, contesting positions, or disrupting a defended area.
Damage: engage and pursue eliminations
Damage heroes seek out, engage, and defeat enemies with varied tools, abilities, and playstyles. This role may suit you if you like actively applying pressure to opponents. The ways Damage heroes approach a fight are not all alike.

Support: enable allies in more than one way
Support heroes empower allies through healing, shielding, damage boosts, and disabling enemies. Support is not simply a synonym for healer: the role includes several forms of team utility. If you enjoy helping teammates succeed, consider which kind of support work you find satisfying.
Use sub-roles and Perks to narrow the choice
Blizzard’s 2026 Overwatch overview adds sub-roles within the three broad roles. Its listed examples include Tank Bruisers, Initiators, and Stalwarts; Damage Sharpshooters, Flankers, Specialists, and Recon; and Support Tacticians, Medics, and Survivors. The overview names the heroes assigned to each sub-role and describes a passive for each.

Use those labels and passives as a second filter: they can help distinguish heroes who share a broad role. Assignments and passives can change with updates, so check the current in-game information rather than treating a label remembered from an older season as permanent.
The same overview describes hero-specific Perks as options that can shift a kit toward your playstyle or the needs of a battle. A role helps you narrow the roster; the hero’s kit and available in-game choices shape how that hero can be played.

How to choose a hero by playstyle
- Choose the contribution you want to make. Do you want to absorb pressure and contest positions, engage enemies, or enable teammates? Start with the matching broad role.
- Compare how heroes engage. Look at movement, effective range, survivability, and ability style. Ask whether you prefer to fight from a distance, close in, move around the battlefield, or hold a position. These are practical comparison points, not an official Blizzard scoring system.
- Try a small range of heroes. Pick a few that appeal to you and pay attention to whether their role and kit feel enjoyable and useful in the match. If not, switch and try another. There is no universal hero-selection test that guarantees a perfect fit.
- Reassess for the match in front of you. Your preferred hero may not be the most useful choice in every situation. Treat a switch as an adjustment to the current match, not as a failure to commit to a main.
How to decide when to switch
Consider switching when your current hero’s way of contributing is not helping you address the match’s needs, or when another hero’s movement, range, survivability, or abilities better fit the situation. You can also change when the kit simply is not working for you. Compare what you want to accomplish with what your current hero can do, then try a different hero if the mismatch persists.
A hero’s strength is contextual, so avoid treating any one pick as universally best. In a historical balance discussion, Blizzard game director Aaron Keller described balance evaluation as considering pick rate, skill tier, region, platform, and other statistics, and noted that situational picks can be appropriate. Those comments explain balance philosophy; they are not a current tier list or a recommendation for the present season. Read Keller’s discussion.

What not to assume from the role labels
- Support does not mean healing only. Blizzard also includes shielding, damage boosts, and disabling enemies in its description of the role.
- One role does not have one playstyle. Sub-roles, movement, range, survivability, and hero abilities all affect how a character feels to play.
- Role labels do not establish a universal best pick. The available balance commentary is contextual and historical, not a current role-by-role ranking.
- Old queue rules are not current guidance by themselves. Blizzard’s 2019 Role Queue announcement described role selection before queueing and a 2-2-2 team arrangement for that implementation. It is historical information, not evidence that those mechanics or composition details are current.
