Switch 2 is worth the premium if you want its exclusive games, a larger 1080p handheld screen, or higher-resolution TV output. The original LCD Switch remains a reasonable choice if its games meet your needs and the price gap matters more than those upgrades. Before buying, check compatibility for the games you rely on and include any storage or replacement accessories in your budget. Prices below are US references from Nintendo and can vary by retailer and date.
What changes between Switch 2 and the original Switch?
The comparison here is with the original LCD Nintendo Switch, not the Switch OLED. Switch 2 brings a larger, higher-resolution LCD, more built-in storage, updated controllers, and stronger TV output. Those specifications do not guarantee that every game uses the maximum resolution or refresh rate.

The handheld upgrade is larger, but still LCD
Switch 2’s 7.9-inch, 1080p display is a substantial size and resolution change from the original LCD Switch’s 6.2-inch screen. It is not OLED. If display technology matters more to you than Switch 2 games or other hardware upgrades, compare the Switch OLED as a separate option rather than treating it as the original LCD model.
4K is a TV-output ceiling, not a game-by-game guarantee
Nintendo lists output up to 4K at 60 fps in TV mode with a compatible display. The actual resolution and performance depend on the game; the specification should not be read as a claim that all titles render at 4K or maintain a particular frame rate.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Storage cards are not interchangeable for game expansion
Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal storage and uses microSD Express for game storage expansion. Nintendo says a conventional microSD card can be used only to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch; it cannot expand Switch 2 game storage. If 256 GB will not be enough for your library, include a compatible microSD Express card in your cost calculation.
Can you bring your games, account, and accessories?
Games and Nintendo Account
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo notes that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible because the hardware differs. Check Nintendo’s current Switch-to-Switch 2 compatibility information for any must-play game before upgrading; compatibility is not an all-or-nothing guarantee.
Nintendo Accounts, eShop funds, account-linked digital software, user profiles, and linked accounts can be used or transferred to Switch 2, according to Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.

Work out the real difference using the prices and contents available to you now. Add a microSD Express card if needed, plus any Switch 2-specific dock, case, or other accessories you must replace. The older dock does not carry over, so a comparison based only on console prices may understate the cost of changing systems.

Who should buy Switch 2—and who should keep the original?
Switch 2 makes sense if
- You want games that are exclusive to Switch 2.
- You will use the larger 1080p handheld screen or benefit from its higher-resolution TV output.
- You want the new Joy-Con 2 features in games that support them.
- The current price, storage needs, and replacement accessories fit your budget.
The original Switch is still a sensible choice if
- The games you want are available and work well on the system you own.
- You do not value the new screen, TV output, or controller features enough to justify the price difference.
- Buying now would require extra spending on storage or accessories you do not need on your current console.
Consider the Switch OLED if the screen is the deciding factor
Switch 2 has an LCD, while the Switch OLED has an OLED display. If your main reason to upgrade is handheld image quality, compare the OLED model separately against Switch 2: the choice is not simply between the original LCD Switch and Switch 2.
Should Switch 2’s sales record affect your decision?
Nintendo said more than 3.5 million Switch 2 systems sold worldwide in the first four days after the June 5, 2025 launch, based on Nintendo’s internal sales data. That is a historical launch figure, not evidence that the console is the right value for an individual buyer. Nintendo of America President and COO Doug Bowser called it “an upgraded way to play at home and on the go”; that is Nintendo’s promotional characterization, not an independent assessment. Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 announcement.
