“Terms & Conditions Apply”: The Game That Dares You to Opt Out

A game described in a University of Luxembourg thesis turns consent prompts into a challenge: say no to terms, notifications and cookies.

Terms & Conditions Apply flips a familiar interface script: instead of nudging a player to accept, it asks them to refuse. A University of Luxembourg thesis describes it as a web-playable game about saying no to terms, notifications and cookies—an unusual way to model how privacy dark patterns can steer people toward sharing personal data.

What is Terms & Conditions Apply?

The University of Luxembourg repository thesis Dark Cookie — A serious game to train users to spot and interact with dark patterns describes Terms & Conditions Apply as a game created by WKLondon et al. and gives termsandconditions.game as its play address. That is the address cited by the thesis, not confirmation that the site is currently available or unchanged. (University of Luxembourg thesis record)

How does the game reverse the usual consent prompt?

According to the thesis extract, the objective is to “successfully not accept any terms and conditions,” “say no to all notifications,” and “always opt out of cookies.” Rather than treating acceptance as the routine path through a digital interface, the game makes refusal the task.

That reversal is the point: prompts for consent and permission can be presented as ordinary steps that are easy to click through. By making the player actively decline them, the premise draws attention to the decisions that interfaces ask users to make—and to the possibility that interface design can push those decisions in a particular direction.

What does it teach about privacy dark patterns?

The thesis frames the game as a model of privacy dark patterns: design choices that can steer people into giving away personal data. Its premise invites players to notice and interact with requests that are often treated as routine, including cookie and notification prompts. For a video-game audience, the striking mechanic is not winning through accumulation or compliance, but trying to keep control by opting out.

The evidence available about the game describes that educational premise; it does not report effectiveness testing or a measured learning outcome. The game can therefore be understood as an interactive way to explore the idea, not as proof that playing makes users better at identifying dark patterns.
