For a reliable start in Abyss, complete the tutorial, learn to manage oxygen, and build a repeatable fishing-and-selling loop in safer areas before pushing deeper. Upgrade the gear that addresses your actual bottleneck, overlap nearby quests when practical, and judge artifacts by their full stat lines—not rarity alone.
How should you progress in Abyss as a beginner?
Early progress is more dependable when you improve your survival and income loop before taking on riskier routes. Running out of oxygen can cost you money and some of the fish you caught, so surface while you still have a safe margin rather than treating the final moments of your oxygen bar as usable exploration time. The Abyss Wiki beginner guide and the fan project’s Getting Started guide both emphasize learning the basics and avoiding premature deep pushes.
- Finish the tutorial. Use its objectives to learn the basic controls and fishing loop before committing to a longer trip.
- Fish in an area you can handle. Start with accessible catches; the beginner guide recommends common fish before pursuing rarer ones as your gear improves.
- Sell catches and repeat. Treat fishing and selling as your early income source, and leave time to return safely rather than losing part of a haul to a death.
- Take nearby quests together. When objectives overlap, accepting them before heading out can reduce repeated travel and catches.
- Upgrade for a specific need. More oxygen or depth access helps when survival or route access is limiting you; movement, carrying capacity, or quicker catches matter when those are the constraint.
- Move deeper gradually. If deaths are outpacing your ability to buy improvements, return to a safer fishing loop and build up before trying again.
Which starting quests and unlocks are worth pursuing?
Starting-area quest chains are useful both for rewards and for learning the game’s systems. The beginner guide describes quests from the Kraken, Mr. Black, Virelia, and the Scientist as part of early progression. Accept quests that fit the same trip where possible, but check the current objectives and rewards with the NPCs in game: quest steps and rewards can change.
Overlap quests when routes make sense
An All Things How route guide updated February 12, 2026 recommends taking objectives from Virelia and Mr. Black while advancing the Kraken’s first quest chain. It says Kraken quests 1–5 reward a Normal Tube and Advanced Gun. Treat that as a dated fan-guide route, not a guaranteed current reward; verify the chain and reward in game before planning around it. Prioritize the Scientist’s teleporter quest if travel is slowing you down
Both beginner references recommend unlocking the teleporter early because it can reduce travel between biomes. The All Things How guide describes a Scientist quest involving five items on the starting island, but exact steps should be checked against the current in-game quest. If you do not yet have reliable oxygen or a reason to travel farther, establish your safer fishing loop first.
What should you buy first: a tube or a gun?
Choose based on what is stopping your next trip. The beginner guide describes tubes as affecting oxygen capacity, maximum depth, speed, and weight limit; guns affect how quickly fish are weakened for capture. Those roles make the choice situational rather than a universal shopping order.

After buying gear, check that it is equipped: the beginner guide warns that new gear may need to be equipped manually. Then take a manageable trip to see whether the upgrade actually addresses your bottleneck.
For a concrete but dated example, the All Things How guide updated February 12, 2026 recommends saving for a Pufferfish Tube before entering Ancient Sands and lists its price as $4,000. That is a route snapshot, not an official or verified October 2026 price list; check the in-game shop and your current route before saving toward it. The same guide describes later purchases from Marcus and upgrades before Spirit Roots, but those recommendations also depend on current prices and progression.

How should you choose artifacts for a beginner loadout?
Artifacts provide passive stat modifiers, and a roll can include tradeoffs rather than a pure upgrade. Compare the full stat line with the route you plan to take: oxygen and other survival stats may suit deeper exploration, while speed, weight, cooldown, damage, or cash can matter more for a particular movement, carrying, catching, or farming goal. A rarer artifact is not automatically the better fit.
The fan-maintained Artifacts reference, last verified February 11, 2026, lists 23 entries across five categories and cautions that pools and stat ranges may change with updates. Its named examples show why reading the whole line matters:

These are the values recorded by that fan reference, not a current official balance guarantee. Check the item’s current in-game stats before committing to a build. The beginner guide also says geodes can be taken to Virelia to be opened; equip the resulting artifact whose tradeoffs best match the activity you are doing.

- Safer exploration: Favor a tube that addresses your oxygen or depth limit. Choose artifact lines that support survival on the route you intend to take.
- More efficient catches: If survival and access are already sufficient, consider a gun that weakens fish faster. Compare cooldown and damage modifiers against your actual catch routine.
- Movement or carrying: When distance or carrying is the constraint, weigh speed and weight modifiers alongside tube stats.
- Currency farming: Match cash-oriented artifact bonuses to a route you can farm safely and consistently. A bonus is useful only if the route itself works for your current gear.
Race bonuses are another build consideration. The beginner guide describes races as providing passive bonuses such as speed, damage, or oxygen, and says they can be rerolled with Star Shards. The references do not establish current odds or a reliable best-race ranking, so compare the bonus you actually have with your goal rather than spending resources to chase an unsupported tier list.
When should you leave the safe loop and go deeper?
Try a deeper route when your current tube gives you enough margin for the trip and your gear can handle the catches you expect to target. If you are repeatedly surfacing in a panic, losing hauls, or dying before upgrades become affordable, that is a sign to shorten the route and rebuild your cash loop—not to push farther simply because the next biome is available.
Fish mutations can increase sale value, according to the beginner guide, but the sources do not establish a dependable current multiplier for a specific mutation. Build your income plan around catches you can reliably bring back rather than an unverified payout figure. Prices, quest rewards, item stats, and balance can change; the detailed route and artifact references cited here were published or verified in February 2026.
