There is no official or universal list of the best video game protagonists. This ranking is an editorial judgment based on four questions: how much a character develops and shows emotional range; how play gives the protagonist agency; how strongly the character shaped gaming culture; and how well the character has endured across games and generations. A character can be iconic without being richly written, and a largely silent hero can still be compelling through the choices and actions the player inhabits.
BAFTA’s 2024 poll named Lara Croft the most iconic video game character, a useful measure of recognition—not a verdict on protagonist writing or gameplay agency. BAFTA’s poll announcement also discusses Mario, Link, Master Chief, Ellie, and Kratos. The ten below are ranked by the stated criteria, not by that poll.
10. Gordon Freeman — Half-Life
Gordon Freeman is almost entirely defined by what the player does. He rarely speaks, has no visible face in ordinary play, and is not given a conventional personal arc. That makes him less emotionally specific than the characters higher on this list, but it also makes his agency unusually direct: the player navigates Black Mesa’s disasters, solves environmental problems, and survives through action rather than watching a hero act on their behalf.
His influence is inseparable from the first-person games built around him. Gordon is a strong example of a protagonist whose character is partly an interface: the story supplies pressure and consequences, while the player supplies intention.

9. Samus Aran — Metroid
Samus has long stood out as a capable lead whose identity is not reducible to dialogue or exposition. The Metroid games make exploration, vulnerability, and gradual empowerment part of inhabiting her role: the player begins constrained, learns the world, and gains the tools to push farther into it. That structure gives her a compelling relationship to player agency even when the games leave much of her inner life unstated.
Her quiet presentation means she often has less visible emotional development than a cinematic protagonist. Her staying power comes instead from the coherence between character and play: Samus is a solitary explorer, and the player’s work of discovering a hostile world is central to the experience.
8. Mario — Super Mario
Mario is one of gaming’s clearest examples of personality conveyed through play rather than a detailed biography. His expressive movement, upbeat tone, and immediate readability make him an unusually effective protagonist across different kinds of adventures. He does not usually undergo a dramatic character transformation, so he ranks below leads whose emotional journeys are central; his strength is consistency and adaptability.
That simplicity is also a design achievement. Mario’s recognizable character can anchor games that continually change their settings and mechanics, giving him cultural staying power without requiring a fixed, heavily explained backstory. BAFTA included Mario among the leading names in its 2024 iconic-character poll, which speaks to recognition rather than a judgment about writing quality.

7. Master Chief — Halo
Master Chief begins as a comparatively restrained military hero, but the Halo series gradually makes his loyalty, isolation, and relationships more consequential. The character’s controlled exterior gives the player a powerful action-game avatar, while the surrounding story tests what that role costs him. His development is not as emotionally expansive as the entries above, yet the tension between soldier and person gives him more shape than a purely silent player stand-in.
Chief’s case rests on the fit between play and character. The player experiences him as exceptionally capable, but the story repeatedly places that capability inside a larger conflict and asks what duty means when the people and institutions around him change.
6. Link — The Legend of Zelda
Link is usually quiet, but that does not make him an empty protagonist. The player’s curiosity, decisions about where to explore, and willingness to take risks supply much of the character’s presence. The Legend of Zelda games make discovery feel like a personal undertaking: Link’s defining quality is often less a spoken personality than the resolve to enter an unknown place and keep going.
Because many Zelda games present distinct versions of Link rather than one continuous character arc, his emotional development varies by title. His enduring strength is the relationship between a recognizable hero and a player-led adventure. BAFTA’s 2024 poll discusses Link among notable characters, a recognition marker rather than a ranking of protagonist depth.

5. Lara Croft — Tomb Raider
Lara Croft combines a strong visual identity with a role built around exploration, problem-solving, and survival. Across the franchise, different games emphasize different sides of her: the confident adventurer, the resourceful explorer, or a younger lead shaped by danger and loss. That variation gives her a broader narrative range than a mascot protagonist, while her recurring presence has made her one of gaming’s most durable figures.
Recognition and writing quality are separate measures, but Lara has an unusually strong case on both. BAFTA named her the most iconic video game character in its 2024 poll; PlayStation’s editorial on its greatest heroines also describes her as an enduring icon. Those are attributed judgments about prominence, not proof that every version of the character is equally developed.
4. Kratos — God of War
Kratos has one of gaming’s most visible long-form transformations. In the earlier God of War stories, rage and vengeance define him; later entries put fatherhood, restraint, grief, and responsibility at the center. The change is not simply a softer tone: the games make the effort to control violence part of how the player understands his relationships and choices.
His arc is especially effective because his physical power remains constant while his idea of strength changes. BAFTA’s announcement quoted Christopher Judge, the actor portraying Kratos, saying, “Playing Kratos has truly been a great joy of my professional career.” That speaks to Judge’s experience portraying the character, not to an independent critical consensus.

3. Ellie — The Last of Us
Ellie is compelling because her relationships and changes over time are not side notes to the action; they are the story’s emotional engine. The Last of Us gives her wit, fear, anger, affection, and flaws, then places those traits under pressure. Her actions can be uncomfortable or difficult to endorse, which makes her feel more like a character with agency than a vehicle for easy approval.
Her place near the top reflects the strength of her characterization and the way the player is made to inhabit her perspective. PlayStation’s editorial on its greatest heroines specifically points to Ellie’s character growth and relationships as central to her portrayal. That platform-holder perspective aligns with the games’ emphasis on those elements, but it is not a neutral cross-industry ranking.

Arthur Morgan earns his place through a slow, emotionally legible transformation. He is introduced as a capable member of an outlaw gang, but the story steadily tests his loyalty, his assumptions about the life he has built, and the person he wants to be. The result is a protagonist whose development feels connected to both the people around him and the choices the player makes within the game.
Arthur’s agency is not unlimited: the broad shape of the story is authored, and the player does not decide every consequential event. But the game gives room for the player to express a version of him through conduct, attention, and interactions. That tension between a defined character and a role the player helps inhabit makes his journey particularly affecting.

1. The player character — Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium’s unnamed detective is the strongest overall protagonist here because the game makes the work of constructing a self inseparable from play. He begins in a state of personal collapse, and the player decides how he responds: what he tries to remember, how he treats other people, and what kind of person he might become. His inner voices turn competing impulses into part of the game’s language, giving the player unusually direct access to confusion, self-deception, and change.
The detective is not a blank slate. His past, failures, and circumstances are built into the story, and the player cannot erase them by choosing a preferred persona. Instead, agency lies in deciding what to do with a damaged life. That balance—between a specific character and meaningful room for the player—makes him the most complete protagonist on this list.
Why these protagonists rank above other icons
Iconic status matters, but it is not the same as protagonist quality. A recognition poll can show which characters are widely known; it cannot, by itself, measure how a game develops a character, gives the player agency, or sustains an arc. Editorial rankings also depend on their chosen standards: GamesRadar+ describes its 2025 character ranking as editorial picks based on impact on players and games, a different framing from this list’s four-part rubric.
The ranking therefore includes several kinds of lead: a nearly silent avatar, a character whose personality emerges through movement, and more explicitly written protagonists who change over time. Their strengths differ, but each connects the character to what games uniquely ask players to do—act, explore, choose, or inhabit a point of view.
