If you love the original Doom, start with Doom II for the closest continuation. For other takes on the same appeal, try Quake for true 3D movement, Heretic or Hexen for dark fantasy, and modern throwbacks such as DUSK and Prodeus. These games share different parts of Doom’s appeal: speed, combat, maze-like levels, secrets, or a direct link to its history.

What makes a game feel like Doom?

The original Doom, released in 1993, is remembered for fast movement, enemy-filled combat, maze-like levels, and the satisfaction of finding hidden routes. Its 1994 sequel, Doom II, expanded the levels and rewarded exploration with off-the-beaten-path secrets. Those qualities are useful comparisons, but “Doom-like” can also mean a historical connection to the games that followed it—or a modern game that revisits old-school shooter conventions. Game Informer’s history of the genre and Xbox Wire’s Doom retrospective discuss the series’ pace, level design, and action.

10 games to play if you love the original Doom

1. Doom II: Hell on Earth

The most direct next choice: Doom II continues the original’s combat and exploration, with larger levels and more secrets to uncover. Choose it if you want more of the same basic formula rather than a reinterpretation.

2. Quake

Quake is a natural step through id Software’s classic FPS lineage, but it changes how spaces work. Its true 3D levels and vertical camera movement take the action beyond the largely flat, maze-like spaces associated with the first Doom. Try it if you want the same broad lineage with a new sense of depth.

#1 Best Overall
DOOM: The Classics Collection (Limited Run #102)
  • Doom The Classics Collection physical game for Nintendo Swith.
  • This includes three classic DOOM games preserved on one cartridge - DOOM, DOOM II, and DOOM 3! No game downloads required.
  • Includes a full-color manual and reversible cover art.

3. Heretic

Heretic uses the Doom engine for a dark-fantasy variation on the formula. It swaps science-fiction firearms for fantasy weapons, making it a good fit if you want familiar old-school action in a different setting.

4. Hexen

Another Doom-engine fantasy game, Hexen changes the arsenal and atmosphere while retaining a connection to that early FPS lineage. Pick it over Heretic if you want a different fantasy take and are more interested in exploration and mood than reproducing Doom’s sci-fi combat.

5. Duke Nukem 3D

Duke Nukem 3D is a landmark relative from the 1990s Doom-clone era, but its irreverent tone sets it apart. It suits players looking for a historically connected shooter with a very different personality.

6. Blood

Blood belongs to the same broad Doom-clone era and leans into gory combat. It is a strong classic-era option if you want the violent, fast-action side of Doom’s appeal more than a close match in setting.

7. DUSK

DUSK is a modern retro FPS whose creators explicitly cite Doom, Quake, Blood, Heretic, and Hexen among its inspirations. Its Steam page describes three campaign episodes and additional modes. That makes it a useful pick for someone who wants a newer game openly drawing on several branches of the 1990s shooter tradition. See DUSK on Steam.

8. Amid Evil

Amid Evil brings the retro-FPS revival into dark fantasy. Rather than leaning on a conventional shotgun arsenal, it centers magic, offering a different route to the brisk, old-school action associated with Doom and Quake-inspired shooters.

9. Ion Fury

Ion Fury is a modern entry in the broader retro-FPS movement. Consider it if you want a contemporary game looking back toward classic shooters, while recognizing that the shared label does not make it a direct remake of Doom’s mechanics.

10. Prodeus

Prodeus reimagines the old-school FPS with modern rendering while keeping a retro technical aesthetic, according to its official site. It is for players who want the visual language of an older shooter paired with a newer presentation—not an exact recreation of 1993 Doom.

Choose by the part of Doom you want back

What you want Start with Why
The closest continuation Doom II It directly follows the original, expanding its levels and secrets.
Classic lineage, different space and movement Quake It introduces true 3D spaces and vertical movement.
Fantasy in place of science fiction Heretic or Hexen Both are Doom-engine fantasy variations with different weapons and atmosphere.
A 1990s relative with a distinct personality Duke Nukem 3D or Blood Both come from the broad Doom-clone era; one is irreverent, the other notably gory.
A modern game that names classic shooters as influences DUSK Its creators cite Doom and several other 1990s FPS games as inspirations.
Retro aesthetics with modern presentation Prodeus Its official description pairs old-school FPS design with modern rendering.

There is no single ranking that captures every kind of similarity. If you mean Doom’s direct history, choose Doom II, then explore its contemporaries. If you mean speed and retro action, the modern revival offers alternatives; if you mean secrets and maze-like levels, prioritize games that emphasize exploration rather than judging by appearance alone.
