The Dark Citadel is a cooperative endgame activity from Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, so access requires the expansion as well as the game’s endgame unlock quest. Blizzard describes it as three wings leading to a final boss, with at least two players required and four recommended.
Coordinate with your party using voice chat or the in-game Marker System, or use Party Finder to assemble a group. Blizzard’s published overview explains the activity’s structure and reward cadence, but it is launch-era guidance; check the current game and patch notes before relying on detailed encounter instructions.

How do I unlock the Dark Citadel?
The Dark Citadel is Vessel of Hatred expansion content. You need Diablo IV’s base game and access to the expansion. Expansion ownership does not replace the activity’s endgame introductory quest, which Blizzard says needs to be completed once per account. The reviewed overview does not specify a current difficulty-tier requirement, so check the in-game quest and activity requirements rather than relying on an unverified tier number.
If you are checking which edition or package gives you access, confirm ownership and platform compatibility in your platform’s storefront. Blizzard’s Lord of Hatred announcement says that offer includes Vessel of Hatred and requires the Diablo IV base game; verify current terms before buying.

How many players do you need for the Dark Citadel?
Blizzard’s overview gives a minimum party size of two and recommends four players. The activity is designed around cooperation, not solo play; the reviewed sources do not establish that solo entry is possible. Coordinate on objectives and mechanics rather than assuming that damage alone will carry the group.
How is the Dark Citadel structured?
Blizzard describes three individual wings, each with challenges and battles leading toward a final boss. Wings can be completed as a group across multiple visits, so you do not have to finish all of them in one sitting. Treat this as an overview of the activity’s intended structure, not a current room-by-room walkthrough.

How do I find a group for the Dark Citadel?
- Open Party Finder from the map, the in-game menu, or the preset emote-wheel action described by Blizzard.
- List or search for a party for the Dark Citadel, selecting the wing and preferences relevant to your run.
- Before entering, agree on how you will communicate and handle objectives. Blizzard describes an in-game Marker System for indicating intended actions.
Voice chat is another coordination option. Blizzard’s overview specifically says: “Communication with your allies will be key within the walls of the Citadel, and a new Marker System will be available to help indicate your next intended move.”
What rewards do you get from the Dark Citadel?
Blizzard says the first completion each week can award a Weekly Rewards cache. Its contents could include exclusive Citadel items; the source does not establish a guaranteed specific item or a complete current reward table. Citadel Coins earned in the activity can be used to unlock exclusive cosmetics.

What is confirmed—and what may have changed?
Blizzard’s official overview is useful for the three-wing structure, party guidance, group-finding, and reward cadence. It dates from the activity’s launch period, however, and official patch notes record historical fixes involving progression, tooltips, reward delivery, and controller interactions. Those notes do not show that the issues remain in the current build.
