Shadow of the Erdtree offers plenty of ways to build around its new weapons, sorceries, and incantations. These ten ideas are recommendations—not claims of personally tested loadouts or a ranking of the expansion’s strongest builds. Treat each as a starting point, and check weapon requirements and scaling in your own game before committing levels.
Before choosing a Shadow of the Erdtree build
Shadow of the Erdtree is the Elden Ring expansion set in the Land of Shadow. It launched June 21, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and Steam. The expansion requires the Elden Ring base game; the official product page also lists an edition that bundles the base game and expansion. Check your platform and existing ownership before purchasing.
Build advice is sensitive to balance updates. The latest official checkpoint referenced here is patch 1.17, dated August 27, 2026; its notes include changes affecting DLC weapons, spells, incantations, and perfume bottles. Older guides may describe an earlier balance state. For spell choices in particular, Windows Central’s guide counts 42 Land of Shadow spells—14 sorceries and 28 incantations—but says its rankings are based on version 1.16. Its S-tier labels are editorial judgments using factors such as efficiency, FP cost, ease of use, and PvP viability, not a patch 1.17 reassessment.
Scadutree Blessing strengthens your character in the DLC area, while Revered Spirit Ash Blessing strengthens summoned spirits and Torrent. The official Elden Ring news and guides explains that these effects remain active throughout that area. Consider collecting blessings as you explore rather than judging a build solely by how it performs before those upgrades.

Weapon builds for different melee styles
1. Rellana’s Twin Blades: a weapon-centered hybrid
Build around Rellana’s Twin Blades if you want a DLC weapon to define your character’s combat style. The official patch 1.17 notes raised the weapon’s critical-hit power, so advice that relies on an older balance snapshot may not describe its current behavior. This is a weapon-led hybrid concept, not a complete stat sheet: confirm its requirements and scaling in-game before deciding how to split attributes.
2. Star-Lined Sword: a dexterity-and-magic direction
The Star-Lined Sword is a DLC katana identified by PC Gamer as a notable weapon. It suits a character concept that combines dexterity-focused weapon use with magic investment, but the available guidance does not establish exact attribute requirements, scaling values, or a current optimal allocation. Check those details in-game before spending levels. PC Gamer’s Shadow of the Erdtree weapons guide includes a location guide for the sword.
3. Rakshasa’s Great Katana: a great-katana melee setup
Use Rakshasa’s Great Katana as the centerpiece of a great-katana approach if you prefer committing to weapon attacks over spellcasting. Patch 1.17 changed the timing after left-hand attacks and also calls out a PvP damage adjustment. Those details matter when evaluating a dual-hand setup or PvP performance; they should not be generalized into a claim about every PvE situation. The cited weapon guide covers the DLC weapon, but does not establish a current stat allocation here.
4. Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword: a colossal-weapon approach
This is the option for players who want a colossal weapon to anchor their build. PC Gamer’s DLC weapons guide specifically covers the Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword, but the available evidence does not confirm its current requirements, scaling, or a tested attribute spread. Inspect the weapon’s in-game details and build around those values rather than assuming a generic colossal-weapon stat plan applies.

5. Perfume Bottle with Rolling Sparks: an area-attack concept
PC Gamer connects Rolling Sparks with Perfume Bottle builds, making this a distinct alternative to conventional weapon movesets. Patch 1.17 increased attack power for the perfume bottles listed in its notes, so older damage advice may be out of date. The sources here do not establish a current damage figure, exact attribute allocation, or matchup guarantee; check the patch notes and your in-game weapon details before investing around a numerical claim.
6. Hand-to-hand martial arts: a close-range contrast
For a very different feel, build around the DLC’s martial-arts hand-to-hand equipment. PC Gamer flags the martial-arts gloves in its weapons coverage. This is a close-range play-style direction rather than a verified optimized loadout: confirm the item’s current name, requirements, and acquisition information in the guide and in-game before planning attributes around it.
Spell builds for sorcery and incantation users
7. Impenetrable Thorns: a sorcery-centered build
Windows Central placed Impenetrable Thorns in S tier in a spell guide based on game version 1.16. That ranking is the guide’s evaluation, not a universal guarantee or a current patch 1.17 verdict. It is a candidate for a sorcery-focused character; verify its present effects and the staff, attributes, and supporting equipment you plan to use in-game. The ranking guide’s stated criteria include efficiency, FP cost, ease of use, and PvP viability.
8. Pest-Thread Spears: a spell direction for large targets
Windows Central recommends Pest-Thread Spears for large targets and also notes its use while exploring. Treat that as the guide’s suggested fit, not a promise that it will outperform alternatives against every large enemy. It gives this build idea a target-focused angle, but does not establish a universal boss ranking or a complete catalyst and attribute setup.

Windows Central lists Fire Serpent among its S-tier incantations in the version 1.16 ranking. That makes it one candidate for a faith-oriented spell build, not proof that a particular stat spread or catalyst remains optimal after patch 1.17. Confirm the current spell details and your intended catalyst setup in-game before settling on attribute targets.
10. Knight’s Lightning Spear: another faith-spell option
Knight’s Lightning Spear is another incantation the same Windows Central guide places in S tier. Consider it alongside Fire Serpent if you are choosing a faith-spell direction, but the available evidence does not support a definitive comparison of range, casting windows, or encounter fit between them. Those factors depend on the spell’s current behavior and the enemies you are facing.

These options are deliberately varied, not an objectively strongest-build list. Use the distinctions below to narrow down what you want to play, then verify the equipment and attribute details for your chosen setup in-game.
| Build idea | Combat direction | Evidence-based point to weigh |

| Rellana’s Twin Blades | Weapon-centered hybrid | Patch 1.17 raised critical-hit power. |

| Rakshasa’s Great Katana | Great-katana melee | Patch 1.17 changed timing after left-hand attacks and notes a PvP damage adjustment. |
| Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword | Colossal-weapon melee | Covered in PC Gamer’s DLC weapons guide; current stat details should be checked in-game. |
| Perfume Bottle with Rolling Sparks | Perfume-based attacks | PC Gamer connects Rolling Sparks to Perfume Bottle builds; patch 1.17 raised attack power for listed perfume bottles. |
| Hand-to-hand martial arts | Close-range martial arts | PC Gamer flags DLC martial-arts gloves; confirm current item details before planning attributes. |
| Impenetrable Thorns | Sorcery | Windows Central ranked it S tier using version 1.16. |
| Pest-Thread Spears | Incantation, suggested for large targets | Windows Central recommends it for large targets and exploration. |
| Fire Serpent | Faith incantation | Windows Central ranked it S tier using version 1.16. |
| Knight’s Lightning Spear | Faith incantation | Windows Central ranked it S tier using version 1.16. |
The official product announcement says players can “freely customize the character to match their play style and confront threats with a uniquely personalized approach.” That flexibility is the point of these concepts: choose the moveset or spell you enjoy, then shape a build around verified in-game requirements instead of treating a ranking as a substitute for your own priorities.
