But “the scariest” is a judgment, not an established franchise ranking. Director Koshi Nakanishi said it may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, while also emphasizing that it alternates tension with relief rather than remaining suffocating throughout.
Capcom describes Resident Evil Requiem as a survival-horror game and the ninth main installment in the series. Announced for release on February 27, 2026, it follows Grace and returning character Leon S. Kennedy through gameplay built around markedly different approaches to danger. The design gives the “scariest” claim a basis: Grace’s vulnerability and scarce supplies are set against Leon’s more action-oriented sections, while the game returns to Raccoon City and lets players choose first- or third-person play. These are reasons the game could feel especially frightening, not proof that every player—or every entry in the franchise—will rank it the same way.

1. Grace is built around vulnerability
Producer Masato Kumazawa has described Grace as a character who reflects the player’s vulnerability, with fear responses and growth central to her journey. That intent matters to horror: danger can feel more immediate when the protagonist is not presented primarily as a capable action hero. It does not guarantee a particular reaction, but it signals that Grace’s fear is part of the character design rather than just atmosphere around her.
2. Scarce supplies turn encounters into survival decisions
PlayStation’s official description says Grace has limited supplies and must assess whether to fight or flee. That choice can make a threat feel consequential: engaging an enemy may cost resources, while avoiding it may leave the danger unresolved. The tension comes from the decision and its trade-offs, not from a claim that every encounter is unwinnable.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
3. Crafting makes the danger part of resource management
Grace can craft items using infected enemy blood, according to the official feature description. This gives resource management a specific role in her sections: what happens to enemies can feed into what she is able to make. The mechanic is a survival-horror system, rather than evidence by itself that the game is more frightening than earlier entries.
4. Leon’s action sections make Grace’s horror stand out
Leon’s gameplay emphasizes firearms, melee attacks, parries, and enemy weapons. Nakanishi said the team used Leon’s segments to push the horror in Grace’s sections. The contrast is the point: the game can give players a more forceful way to confront danger with Leon, then change the terms of the experience with Grace. That shift may sharpen the feeling of vulnerability without making both characters play alike.
5. The game deliberately alternates tension and relief
Nakanishi’s comparison with Village is the clearest direct evidence behind the title’s superlative. In a January 29, 2026, interview with PlayStation.Blog, he said: “Overall, this game may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, but it alternates between tension and relief, so it isn’t a continuous, suffocating experience.” The qualification is important: his statement supports a comparison with Village, not an objective ranking against every Resident Evil game.

6. Raccoon City brings the series’ outbreak history back into focus
Requiem returns to Raccoon City, a setting tied to the series’ outbreak history and broader narrative. Kumazawa said the team felt it fitting to include a character with a personal connection to the city when setting a story amid its ruins. For longtime players, that context may add weight to exploring the location; for newcomers, it establishes that the setting carries a history beyond the immediate threat. The city’s return is a narrative and atmospheric element, not a measurement of scariness.

7. First- and third-person views offer different ways to frame danger
Players can choose first- or third-person perspectives, according to the official feature listing. As an editorial interpretation, first person may make an encounter feel more immediate by limiting the view to the character’s perspective; third person may offer more visual context around the character. Neither effect is universal, and the available descriptions do not establish that one perspective is objectively scarier.

Official descriptions identify exploration, puzzles, combat, and resource management as parts of the game. Together, those systems give the player more to weigh than simply whether to attack: navigating a space, solving a problem, and deciding how to spend limited resources all sit alongside encounters. Their contribution to fear depends on how a player responds to that mix; the feature list alone does not establish a franchise-wide ranking.

- Intense horror experience with dark narrative
- Improved images and refined game mechanics included
- Players take on the role of Leon S Kennedy
- Mission to save the president's daughter from danger
- Challenging environments and strategic combat scenarios await
9. Two different toolkits change how players face danger
Grace and Leon approach threats with distinct sets of tools. Grace’s sections emphasize scarce supplies and crafting, while Leon’s include firearms, melee, parries, and enemy weapons. That difference can vary the rhythm and stakes of confrontation across the game. It also explains why describing Requiem as uniformly helpless or uniformly action-heavy would miss the design: its horror depends partly on moving between those approaches.
10. Its strongest “scariest” case is a qualified one
The strongest case is not that Requiem has been proven scarier than every game in the series. No sourced figure measures fear, and Capcom’s reported sales—more than six million worldwide, which the company said was the fastest a series entry had reached that milestone—say nothing about how frightening it is. Rather, the case rests on the combination of Grace’s vulnerability, her resource decisions, the contrast with Leon, and the return to Raccoon City. Nakanishi’s own comparison goes as far as Village; the broader franchise verdict remains a matter of player and critic judgment.
