No single instruction guarantees a high possession share across different teams and opponents. Treat the tips below as experiments to assess in your own save, not a universal tactic.
Start with a shape that gives the ball carrier options
Possession depends on what your players can do after receiving the ball. If nearby teammates are too far away, occupy the same passing lane, or are marked out of the move, a shorter pass setting will not create a safe outlet. Watch where the ball carrier is getting trapped and whether a teammate is available ahead, alongside, or behind.
FM24’s feature set includes positional rotations and role changes that affect how players support possession. The publisher’s FM24 Console feature overview describes those changes, but the exact options and interface can vary by edition.
Choose complementary roles, not a magic formation
Think about what each role contributes to the shape. One player might hold width, another offer a nearby passing option, and another move into central space. If several players drift into the same area, they can make the team easier to press; if everyone moves away from the ball, the passer may have no short option. Build the combination around your squad rather than copying a formation in isolation.

Try an Inverted Full-Back for central support
One possible way to add a central passing option is the Inverted Full-Back. Football Manager describes the role as “Functioning as a central defender in possession and a traditional full-back out of possession” on its FM24 Console features page. That shift changes the team’s shape when it has the ball. Consider who will cover the flank as the full-back moves inside; this role is an option, not a default recommendation for every squad.
Use shorter passing when the team has outlets
Shorter passing can encourage nearby combinations, but it cannot fix disconnected spacing. Try it when players have clear support options and you want them to favor safer links. If defenders are trapped, repeatedly forced into rushed clearances, or circulating the ball harmlessly without a route forward, check the shape and available progression before making passing even shorter.
User-created FM24 tactic examples, including a Slot-inspired setup, recommend shorter passing, but these are examples rather than controlled tests or guarantees. See the Slot possession and pressing tactic for the community setup.
Decide how patient your buildup should be
Slowing goalkeeper distribution can give teammates time to form options, but it is a separate choice from how aggressively the team defends. A community Farioli-inspired tactic combines slower goalkeeper distribution with a high press and higher defensive line; that example does not show the combination is best for every squad. The community tactic page is best read as one setup to study, not a proven prescription.

Possession does not have to mean choosing the slowest possible tempo. A Slot-inspired community example pairs shorter passing with a slightly higher tempo. In principle, a quicker circulation can move the ball before pressure settles, while a more deliberate pace can give players time to organize; which works depends on your players and match situation. The example is not proof that a particular tempo will work in another save.
Use width or overlaps to add a passing route
A wide player can give the ball carrier an outlet beyond a crowded center. An overlap instruction is one way to create a supporting run outside the player ahead, and it appears alongside shorter passing in a community FM24 tactic example. If a player leaves a flank to make that run, consider whether another teammate can cover the space if possession is lost. The Slot-inspired example illustrates the combination, not a universal rule.

Match buildup ambition to your squad
Playing out from the back is a tactical choice, not an automatic possession solution. FM24 Mobile’s official onboarding feature describes playing out from the back as one available style and presents its strengths and weaknesses in relation to squad strengths. Use that as a general reminder to match ambition to the players you have; do not assume the Mobile screen or wording is identical in other editions. If your defenders or goalkeeper cannot execute the buildup you want, forcing short options may simply invite pressure. On the other hand, if your players can pass and receive under pressure, a more ambitious buildup may suit them. Check the guidance and choices available in your edition and weigh them against the squad in your save.

Plan the response to losing the ball
Possession includes what happens immediately after a turnover. Pressing after losing the ball can be part of an attempt to win it back, but the first player to close down the opponent should not be left unsupported. The Football Association’s general guidance on playing out of possession emphasizes support from nearby teammates so the pressing attempt is not isolated.

In FM24, consider whether teammates are close enough to help and whether the team can recover if the press is bypassed. A press that stretches the shape may expose space; the FA guidance is a general football principle, not a specific FM24 slider recommendation.
Compare the trade-offs before changing instructions

These are tactical trade-offs, not measured FM24 outcomes. The community tactics cited above provide examples; they do not establish one approach as universally superior.

Make one adjustment at a time, then look at the match rather than relying on a single possession percentage. Note where the team loses the ball and what the surrounding players were doing. Use the observations to decide whether you need safer outlets, a clearer route forward, or better support after turnovers.

- Possession lost under pressure: Check whether the receiver has a nearby option and whether the team is asking players to play out in a way the squad can manage.
- Possession kept only in harmless areas: Look for a role or passing route that can move the ball forward without leaving the carrier isolated.
- Opponents breaking through after turnovers: Check whether the press has enough nearby support and whether the team can recover its shape.
Check your edition and version before following menu paths
Football Manager 2024 was released across platforms, but the available features and interface differ by edition. The publisher’s FM24 platform comparison sets out differences between the games. This guide avoids platform-specific menu paths because the right labels and options depend on which edition you play.
Version references also need context: the publisher announced the FM24 main data update on February 29, 2024, describing more than six million data changes alongside gameplay fixes and improvements. That is a historical update, not evidence of the current build or a possession improvement. See the official update announcement. FM24 had been announced as out now across platforms on November 6, 2023; the release announcement provides that context.
