To defend better in Football Manager 2024, start by checking whether your formation, defensive positions and players’ attributes fit the squad you actually have. Then review defensive training and set pieces, and make tactical changes deliberately rather than assuming one formation, line height or pressing setup works for every team. These ten steps turn that review into a practical process; they are not a guaranteed tactic.
1. Check whether your formation fits your squad
Begin with the shape, not a preset idea of the “best” formation. Football Manager’s official announcement described its defending guide as covering formations, positions and attributes, but did not name a universally superior shape. Compare the options your squad can play by asking whether the available players can fill the roles and whether the structure protects the areas you are concerned about.
For example, a formation that looks sound on paper may be a poor fit if your available players do not suit its defensive positions. Treat formation choice as a squad-fit decision, not a promise that a particular shape will prevent goals. Football Manager’s announcement of its FM24 defending guide confirms the guide’s subject areas, but not a specific formation recommendation.
2. Review who occupies each defensive position
Look at the players filling the defensive positions in your chosen formation. Check whether the overall structure leaves a part of the pitch insufficiently covered, especially after you make changes to the lineup or roles. This is a practical way to apply the official guide’s stated focus on positions; it is not a claim that one arrangement is best for every save.

Assess the whole shape together rather than judging a position in isolation. If a change seems to leave an area exposed, compare the alternatives your squad can support before altering several parts of the setup at once.
3. Match player attributes to role demands
Inspect the attributes shown for each player and consider whether they suit the defensive role you want that player to perform. A role name alone does not establish that a player is a good fit. The official announcement says attributes are part of its guide, but does not provide a ranked attribute list or numerical thresholds, so avoid treating any particular score as an official cutoff.
Use the game’s displayed attributes to compare your own candidates. If two players could fill a role, weigh their suitability alongside the needs of the formation rather than assuming a single attribute settles the choice.

4. Use defensive training information where your edition provides it
FM24 Console
In FM24 Console, the Defending training unit shows its workload and the five attributes scheduled for the following week. Players can be moved between units, so check the displayed focus and workload when deciding whether a player belongs in that unit. These menu details are specific to the Console material; do not assume the same interface or information is identical in every FM24 edition. Football Manager’s FM24 Console feature page describes the Console training unit.
5. Treat defensive set pieces as a separate part of your setup
Review your defensive set-piece routines rather than assuming your general formation settles them. FM24’s set-piece creator builds routines from the manager’s stated preferences, and the routines can be customized. Look at the jobs it assigns and decide whether they suit the players available.
The creator’s output is a starting point, not evidence that its assignments are ideal for every squad. Football Manager’s FM24 feature announcement describes the set-piece system and its customization.

6. Put suitable players in set-piece roles
Check which players are assigned to the role categories in a routine and whether their qualities fit those jobs. The official feature announcement gives Aerial Threat as an example of a role category used by the creator. It does not publish exact attribute cutoffs, so use the qualities displayed in your save rather than inventing a universal minimum.
If an assignment does not suit the personnel available, customize the routine. Consider the players who will actually be available to take those jobs, rather than building a routine around an assumed lineup.

FM24 introduced specialized Set Piece Coaches, whose preferences inform the set-piece system. This is a feature to consider when organizing your staff and routines; its existence does not prove that hiring a coach automatically improves defensive results. Check how the feature fits your approach instead of treating the role as a guaranteed fix.

8. Revisit the setup after changes to players or tactics
A setup worth reviewing can become less suitable after a player becomes unavailable, roles change, or set-piece personnel shift. Because FM24 routines are customizable and assignments depend on player roles and qualities, it is sensible to check whether the current arrangement still fits the squad after a meaningful change.
This is a review method, not a measured claim that any particular change will cause more goals. Focus on what changed and whether the existing assignments still make sense.

When deciding between formations or set-piece routines, compare them against practical criteria rather than an unsupported ranking. The sources establish that formations, positions, attributes, training and customizable set pieces are relevant considerations; they do not establish that one option wins across saves.

| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Player suitability | Can your available players fill the positions and roles you want? |
| Defensive coverage | Does the overall structure protect the areas you intend it to cover? |
| Training needs | Where your edition shows training-unit information, does the focus suit the players you assign to it? |
| Set-piece personnel | Do the routine’s assigned role categories fit the qualities of the players available? |
| Customization | How much do you need to adjust the generated routine to suit your preferences and squad? |
10. Change a small number of things, then inspect your own results
Make tactical adjustments deliberately. Change a small number of choices at a time, then review subsequent matches in your save to see whether the setup behaves as you intended. Keeping the changes limited makes it easier to identify which decisions are worth keeping or revisiting.
This is a way to assess your own team, not a published test result or official guarantee. The official FM24 defending-guide announcement dates from 26 January 2024, and its linked original now redirects to the general Football Manager hub; the announcement confirms a focus on positions, formations and attributes, not a particular pressing intensity, defensive-line height or role recipe. Read the announcement.
Which edition and update do these tips cover?
The defending-guide announcement concerns Football Manager 2024 generally. The training-unit details above are specifically described for FM24 Console and should not be generalized to other editions without confirmation. Football Manager announced its final FM24 data update on 9 April 2024, saying it was available across platforms and included more than 400,000 database changes alongside minor gameplay fixes. That is a dated update announcement, not a statement about current roster data or present-day availability. Football Manager’s final data update announcement.
