There is no official or universally agreed ranking of Sonic’s 2D games. This one weighs level design and route variety, controllable momentum, replay value, difficulty, and how practical each game is to play today. “2D” here means side-scrolling play, not necessarily 2D graphics: Sonic Superstars, for example, uses 3D graphics in a side-scrolling format.
How this ranking works
The order is an editorial judgment, not a consensus ranking. It favors games that make speed feel earned: knowing a stage and choosing a route should matter as much as holding right. Replay options, character variety, approachability, and access on current platforms also count. The scope is games whose core play is side-scrolling; games centered on 3D exploration or racing are excluded even if they include 2D sections.

The 11 best 2D Sonic games
-
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 3 & Knuckles takes the top spot for the scale of its stages and the way exploration and speed support each other. Multiple routes reward familiarity, while character choices add reasons to revisit levels. Its main drawback is that the larger stages and period-specific presentation may feel less immediate to players looking for a compact modern game. It is included in Sonic Origins, which offers an accessible collection version alongside the original release context.
-
Sonic Mania
Sonic Mania is a strong modern take on the classic side-scrolling formula, combining familiar ideas with new stages and substantial replay appeal. It sits just below the top because its reliance on classic-series conventions may be less compelling for someone who wants a wholly new direction. SEGA’s Japanese product page lists PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam, and describes Sonic Mania Plus as a package including the base game and Encore Pack. Physical contents and availability vary by region.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
The Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a foundational, brisk entry that makes the series’ speed-and-platforming balance easy to grasp. Its level routes and pace make it a natural starting point, though it offers less of the broader scale and character variety found higher in this ranking. The game is part of Sonic Origins.
-
Sonic CD
Sonic CD earns its place through a distinctive time-travel premise that gives stages a different kind of replay incentive. Its approach is less straightforward than the Genesis games built around a direct run to the finish, so it can be a less natural first pick for players who want uncomplicated momentum. It is included in Sonic Origins.
-
Sonic Advance 3
Sonic Advance 3 broadens the handheld formula with character combinations and encourages experimenting with how you approach its stages. That variety helps replay value, but the added systems can make it a less clean recommendation for a newcomer than the more direct entries above. Its original handheld release is a distinct way to experience the game; current access depends on platform and edition.

Sonic Origins Plus (Day One Edition)- 16 classic titles, 1 timeless collection
- Premium physical edition
- Classic sonic re-defined in widescreen hd
- Classic and anniversary modes
- New playable characters
-
Sonic Rush
Sonic Rush gives the side-scrolling series a brisk handheld variation and a distinct identity among the portable games. Its pace is part of the appeal, but it also makes the experience less suited to players who prefer a slower, more deliberate search through stage routes. It was designed for Nintendo DS, so playing the original version today requires compatible hardware.

Sonic Advance 2
Sonic Advance 2 is a fast, energetic handheld entry that leans into forward momentum. That makes it an appealing choice for players who want a quick run, but less ideal for those who want the measured exploration and multiple-route learning that define the top-ranked games. Its original release was for Game Boy Advance; access to that version requires compatible hardware.
-
Sonic Superstars
Sonic Superstars brings side-scrolling Sonic play to a modern release while using 3D graphics. SEGA described it as combining the classic feel of 2D side-scrolling with crisp 3D graphics in its launch announcement. It is a good choice for someone who wants a newer game rather than a classic collection, though its updated presentation and design make it a different proposition from the Genesis-era entries. SEGA’s October 2023 announcement listed PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games Store; that announcement said Xbox and PC versions were digital-only. Check the relevant store for current platform and format details.

Sonic Origins Plus- Experience 12 beloved sonic game gear titles on current generation platforms
- Includes a retro-inspired reversible cover and a 20-page art book
-
Sonic Advance
The first Sonic Advance is a portable take on classic side-scrolling Sonic, and its place here reflects the strength of the handheld branch as a whole. It is a more straightforward recommendation for players curious about that era than an essential first choice over the better-known console classics. Its original release was for Game Boy Advance, so current access to that version depends on compatible hardware.
-
Sonic the Hedgehog
The original Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog established the series’ side-scrolling foundation and remains a useful way to see where its level design began. Compared with later entries, it is a simpler and more limited package. It is included in Sonic Origins, which makes it easier to approach than seeking out original hardware.

Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Rush Adventure is a handheld side-scrolling entry for players who want another variation on the portable games’ fast pace. It ranks last here because the available evidence does not establish a case for choosing it ahead of the more distinctive alternatives in this list. It originally appeared on Nintendo DS; access to the original version requires compatible hardware.

Which one should you play first?
- For the classic foundation: Start with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, then try Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
- For several classics in one purchase: Sonic Origins collects Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. SEGA’s announcement lists Anniversary, Classic, Mission, Boss Rush, Mirror, and Story modes. Sonic Origins Plus adds the Plus Expansion Pack, 12 Game Gear titles, Knuckles in Sonic CD, and Amy in the four main games. The premium physical edition includes a 20-page art book and reversible coversheet. Confirm platform, region, edition contents, and stock before buying.
- For a modern side-scroller: Consider Sonic Superstars; its 3D graphics do not change its side-scrolling perspective.
- For a modern classic-style revival: Try Sonic Mania, checking the store in your region for platform and edition details.
- For handheld-era games: The Advance and Rush entries were originally released for Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS respectively. Confirm a legitimate compatible way to play before choosing one.
What “2D Sonic” means here
This list ranks games by their core side-scrolling play, not by whether every visual element is drawn in two dimensions. SEGA’s description of Sonic Superstars makes that distinction explicit: it combines classic 2D side-scrolling with 3D graphics. Games whose main experience is 3D exploration or racing are outside this ranking.
Sources and availability
SEGA’s Sonic Origins announcement identifies the four included games, announced platforms, and modes. Its Sonic Origins Plus site describes the Plus contents and premium physical edition. SEGA’s Sonic Superstars launch announcement gives the game’s side-scrolling/3D description, announced platforms, and the cited release-format details. SEGA’s Japanese Sonic Mania page lists platforms and the Mania Plus package. These are product details, not guarantees of present store availability or inventory. For context, GamesRadar+’s June 2026 ranking places Sonic Mania fifth, the original Sonic the Hedgehog fourth, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles third; it is one publication’s editorial list, not a universal order. SEGA Sammy Holdings reported 1.66 billion Sonic series sales and downloads to date in 2024, including free-to-play downloads; that is a franchise-wide aggregate, not paid sales or a figure for these games individually.
