There is no official ranking of the most iconic Call of Duty characters, so this list is an editorial selection—not a popularity poll. It favors characters with a memorable campaign role or turning point, a substantial character arc, or a recurring place in a major storyline. The franchise also includes multiplayer, Zombies, and other modes; this list focuses on campaign characters and keeps Modern Warfare and Black Ops continuities distinct.
Modern Warfare characters
Captain Price, Ghost, Soap, and Gaz belong to the Modern Warfare side of this list. Their stories connect through their military roles, but the franchise has multiple Modern Warfare continuities; a character appearing across entries does not mean every game shares one uninterrupted timeline.

1. Captain John Price
Price is the clearest choice to lead a cross-series list: Activision presents him as a British Special Air Service operator working in the shadows to protect the world. He is a central figure in Modern Warfare campaigns, and his role as a seasoned leader gives the series a recognizable point of continuity. Activision’s Modern Warfare campaign overview describes his SAS work.
2. Simon “Ghost” Riley
Ghost is a Modern Warfare character associated with Task Force 141, known for the skull-patterned mask that makes him instantly identifiable. His importance comes not just from his look: he is one of the squad’s defining figures, and his relationships and choices give the campaign team a personal dimension. PlayStation includes him among its notable Call of Duty characters. Keep in mind that the franchise’s different Modern Warfare continuities give versions of the character distinct contexts.

3. Johnny “Soap” MacTavish
Soap is a key Modern Warfare operative whose connection with Price helps anchor the series’ squad-focused storytelling. His appeal rests on both action and character: developers have described efforts to make Price, Soap, and Ghost flawed, three-dimensional characters with deeper stakes. In a 2026 interview, Xbox Wire spoke with Narrative Director Jeff Negus and Associate Design Director Alex Norris about that approach to the characters. Read the Xbox Wire interview.
4. Kyle “Gaz” Garrick
Gaz is another recognizable Modern Warfare team member, serving alongside Price in the newer campaign storyline. He is a supporting character rather than the franchise’s central face, but his inclusion reflects how much the squad itself matters to Modern Warfare’s identity. PlayStation also names Gaz in its character roster.
Black Ops characters
Black Ops has its own cast and story threads, centered on covert operations, shifting loyalties, and the consequences of past missions. The characters below are prominent in its campaign narratives; their connections should not be treated as part of Modern Warfare’s continuity.
5. Frank Woods
Woods has one of Black Ops’ most sustained character arcs. Activision’s biography traces his military service in Korea and Vietnam, later CIA work, and the Panama mission where Raul Menendez tricks him into shooting Alex Mason, leaving Woods maimed. He later trains younger operatives, linking his past to a new generation. Activision’s Black Ops 6 campaign page outlines his history. In the Russian-roulette scene recapped by Activision, Woods declares, “You can’t kill me!”—a line that captures his defiance under pressure. The official Black Ops story recap identifies the scene.
6. Alex Mason
Mason is the central protagonist of the original Black Ops story: a Marine and CIA operative caught up in the Numbers Program plot. Treyarch’s retrospective says he participated in Operation 40 in Cuba during the Bay of Pigs invasion; the studio dates that fictional-story event to April 17, 1961. Treyarch’s Alex Mason retrospective provides his background, while the official story recap explains his connection to the Numbers Program.
7. Jason Hudson
Hudson is the CIA handler who interrogates Mason about the Numbers Program. His role gives the campaign its framing device: the audience, like Hudson, must work through Mason’s fragmented memories to understand what happened. That makes Hudson more than an intelligence official on the sidelines; he is essential to how the story reveals its central mystery. Activision’s recap describes his interrogation of Mason.
8. Viktor Reznov
Reznov’s place in the Black Ops story is memorable because his apparent presence becomes part of the campaign’s psychological reveal. The official recap says Mason meets the Russian captain in Vorkuta, then later hallucinates his presence. That shift changes how players interpret earlier events and makes Reznov one of the series’ most consequential supporting characters. The Black Ops story recap explains the connection.

9. Russell Adler
Adler is a CIA operative at the center of Black Ops’ early-1980s Cold War narrative, working alongside Mason and Woods. Activision’s biography connects him to a long covert history, making him a bridge between the older Black Ops cast and later campaign events. His guarded personality and uncertain loyalties also suit a series built around espionage and shifting trust. Activision’s campaign biography covers his background.
Two other characters who broaden the list
These final picks add a major antagonist and a character from outside the Modern Warfare and Black Ops groupings. They are selected for their narrative impact, not because an official source ranks them above other candidates.
10. Raul Menendez
Menendez is a defining Black Ops antagonist whose actions reshape Woods’s life and drive the conflict around Alex Mason. His deception in Panama—when he tricks Woods into shooting Mason—is a direct, lasting turning point for both characters. That personal consequence makes Menendez more than a distant enemy: he is tied to the heroes’ past and the costs of their missions. Activision’s Black Ops story recap recounts the Panama incident.
11. Sergeant Viktor Reznov’s World at War counterpart? Why the count stays distinct
Reznov already appears above, so he cannot fill a second slot. Instead, this list closes with another major campaign figure: Alex Mason’s Black Ops antagonist, Raul Menendez, is already counted; the eleventh distinct selection is Captain Price’s fellow Modern Warfare operative, Farah Karim. Farah expands the list beyond the recurring Task Force 141 core: she is a central ally in the newer Modern Warfare campaign storyline and leads the Urzikstan Liberation Force. Her inclusion recognizes the newer games’ campaign cast alongside legacy characters. PlayStation’s official character guide includes Farah among its notable Call of Duty figures. See PlayStation’s character guide.
How to read an “iconic” Call of Duty list
Call of Duty is not one continuous character story. Modern Warfare and Black Ops each have separate campaign casts and continuities, while the franchise also encompasses multiplayer, Zombies, and other formats. PlayStation’s franchise guide distinguishes those modes and presents a notable-character roster. The eleven here are campaign-focused selections, and the ordering is a reasoned editorial choice rather than a measured popularity result.

That distinction matters when comparing characters. Price’s leadership, Ghost’s distinctive presentation, Mason’s role in a psychological mystery, and Woods’s long arc are different kinds of impact. A list weighted toward Zombies, antagonists, or playable protagonists could reasonably choose a different set.
